When Jeff Bezos decided to leave his secure job in 1994 to build an online bookstore, he was pursuing an idea that many people struggled to understand. The internet was still unfamiliar to most investors and the future of online shopping remained uncertain.
His parents, Jackie and Mike Bezos, nevertheless backed him with $245,573 from their savings in 1995. Bezos later recalled that he warned them they could lose their money. They invested anyway because they believed in their son. Nearly three decades later, Amazon has grown from a small internet bookseller into a global technology and retail giant. The family's early decision has since become one of the most remarkable investment stories linked to the company's rise.
Jeff Bezos’s parents’ risky bet on an unfamiliar business
The idea for Amazon came to Bezos in 1994 while he was working at an investment firm in New York. He saw the rapid growth of the internet as an opportunity to create a bookstore with a catalogue far larger than any physical shop could accommodate.Bezos decided to leave his job and pursue the idea in Seattle. His parents provided most of the initial start-up capital, putting a substantial portion of their life savings into a business they did not fully understand.
In his July 2020 testimony before the US House Judiciary Committee, Bezos said he had told his parents there was a 70% chance they would lose their investment. He explained that they were not necessarily betting on the concept of an online bookstore. They were betting on him.The decision came at a time when convincing investors to back an internet business was difficult. Bezos said he attended more than 50 meetings while trying to raise $1 million. One question repeatedly came up during those discussions: what was the internet?
From a small online bookstore to a public company
Amazon opened its online store in 1995. The business initially focused on books because the internet offered a way to display a vast selection without the physical limitations of a traditional shop. The response surprised Bezos. In a later account of Amazon's early days, he recalled receiving orders from customers across all 50 US states and 45 countries soon after the store opened.Amazon went public in May 1997 at $18 per share. The initial public offering raised approximately $54 million and gave the company additional capital to expand its operations. Its future was far from secure, however. Amazon recorded cumulative losses of nearly $3 billion between its founding and the end of 2001.
It did not report a profitable quarter until the final three months of that year. The company also faced scepticism during the dot-com bubble. Its share price reached $116 at the height of the internet boom before falling to $6 after the bubble burst. Bezos recalled that commentators questioned whether Amazon could survive.
How the family's investment grew
The $245,573 investment came in Amazon’s early years, before the company went public. Mike Bezos bought 582,528 shares in February 1995, while Jackie Bezos bought another 847,716 shares in July that year.As Amazon grew from an online bookstore into a global retail and cloud computing giant, its share value increased significantly. The company’s growth turned the family’s early investment into a potentially enormous fortune. The family also donated some of its Amazon shares to the Bezos Family Foundation. According to a 2018 Los Angeles Times report, Jackie and Mike Bezos donated 595,027 shares to the foundation between 2001 and 2016.The exact value of the shares they still hold is not publicly known. A September 2026 Fortune report estimated that Mike Bezos’s remaining stake could be worth about $51.7 billion if he still holds the shares not accounted for by those donations. This is an estimate, not a confirmed figure.
Amazon's growth transformed the original gamble
Amazon's rise was not driven by online retail alone. Over time, it expanded into cloud computing, digital advertising, streaming, logistics and other technology services. One of its most consequential developments was Amazon Web Services. Bezos said in his congressional testimony that some observers initially viewed cloud computing as a distraction from the company's retail business. AWS eventually became a major part of Amazon's operations. The company also expanded its marketplace by allowing independent sellers to offer products alongside Amazon's own inventory. Bezos said third-party sellers accounted for approximately 60% of physical product sales on Amazon at the time of his 2020 testimony.
The family continued to support education and young people
Jackie and Mike Bezos established the Bezos Family Foundation in 2000 with their children and their spouses. The foundation has focused largely on education and child development, supporting research and programmes designed to help young people. The family's donations of Amazon shares helped channel part of its wealth towards philanthropic work. The foundation's activities provide another dimension to the investment story, connecting the family's early financial support for Bezos with its later efforts to fund educational initiatives.
A decision made before Amazon's success was clear
The story of the Bezos family's investment is striking because the outcome was not obvious when the money changed hands. In 1995, Amazon was a young business built around a new way of selling books. Its founder had left a secure job, investors were still learning about the internet and the company had years of financial challenges ahead.Jackie and Mike Bezos accepted the possibility of losing a substantial portion of their savings because they believed in their son. Amazon's eventual growth turned that decision into a landmark example of early backing for a successful technology company.
