Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia supports shifting from an extractive development model to a restorative economy, including by using the economic value of carbon to benefit communities, Environment Minister Jumhur Hidayat said on Tuesday.
"With proper governance, carbon potential from restoration activities can be developed into one source of financing to support sustainable environmental recovery while also benefiting local communities," Hidayat said in a statement.
Hidayat spoke after meeting provincial, district and city leaders from Bali and Nusa Tenggara at the 2026 Sub-National Carbon Economic Value Governance Workshop in Bali on Monday.
The forum aims to integrate climate change, sustainable development, Nationally Determined Contribution targets, the Zero Waste Zero Emission policy and carbon registry governance into regional planning.
Hidayat said carbon value governance must deliver better environmental quality, lower emissions and recovered ecosystems, while economic benefits are shared fairly with the public.
The ministry will help regional governments prepare to implement carbon economic value policies in an integrated way, while credibly and transparently supporting national emission reduction targets.
Environment Ministry Main Secretary Rosa Vivien Ratnawati said carbon economic value is a strategic tool linking emission cuts with economic development and resource mobilization.
"For that reason, a shared understanding is needed among regional government leaders, at the provincial, district, and city levels, on the governance and application of carbon economic value," Ratnawati said.
