Rihanna gave $1.75m for Barbados cancer care; centre still treats patients

In 2012, Rihanna donated $1.75 million worth of medical equipment to Barbados’ Queen Elizabeth Hospital in memory of her grandmother, Clara “Dolly” Brathwaite, who died from cancer that June.

The gift helped modernise the hospital’s cancer-care services, and the radiotherapy unit was renamed the Clara Brathwaite Centre for Oncology and Nuclear Medicine.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Rihanna said the donation was her way of giving back to Barbados and helping the hospital continue its modernisation programme.Fourteen years later, the centre remains a vital part of cancer treatment in Barbados.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital says the Clara Brathwaite Centre provides radiotherapy, oncology, and nuclear medicine services to public and private patients, including people travelling from overseas for care. The donation’s lasting impact is visible not only in the equipment once purchased, but in the continuing services that support patients and families facing cancer.

A gift inspired by loss

Rihanna’s grandmother, whom she called “Gran Gran Dolly,” died in June 2012 after battling cancer.

Later that year, the singer marked the donation with a ceremony at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where the radiotherapy unit was renamed in her grandmother’s honour. The $1.75 million contribution was directed toward medical equipment rather than a symbolic gesture. Rihanna said she believed the gift would have a major impact on the people of Barbados and that it was intended to save lives or extend them.

Her decision reflected both personal grief and a desire to strengthen healthcare access on the island where she grew up.

By naming the centre after Brathwaite, Rihanna also ensured that her grandmother’s memory would remain connected to care for other families facing similar losses.

The Clara Brathwaite Centre Today

The Clara Brathwaite Centre for Oncology and Nuclear Medicine is housed within Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados. The hospital describes it as a provider of radiotherapy, oncology, and nuclear medical services for patients at the hospital, as well as private and public patients from Barbados and overseas.

The centre treats a wide range of cancers, including breast, prostate, gynaecological, lung, brain, head and neck, gastrointestinal, and blood-related cancers, as per the hospital's website.

It also offers care for children from birth to 16 years old through its paediatric cancer services. Patients receiving treatment may undergo radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or both, depending on their diagnosis and treatment plan.

The centre also provides haematology services and therapy support, including physiotherapy and occupational therapy.

Why radiotherapy matters

Radiotherapy uses targeted radiation to damage or destroy cancer cells while limiting harm to surrounding healthy tissue. It is a central treatment option for many cancers and can be used alone or alongside surgery, chemotherapy, and other therapies. The Queen Elizabeth Hospital says its Department of Radiotherapy is based in the Clara Brathwaite Centre and serves patients across the island.

Its work includes treating cancers that affect the breast, prostate, lungs, brain, digestive system, skin, blood, and immune system.Access to radiotherapy is especially important in smaller countries, where patients may otherwise need to travel abroad for specialised treatment. A local centre can reduce travel burdens, help families stay close during treatment, and allow medical teams to provide continuity of care.

A lasting contribution

Rihanna’s donation came at a time when Queen Elizabeth Hospital was pursuing modernisation. The singer described the contribution as assistance for that programme, and the hospital’s continuing use of the Clara Brathwaite Centre shows how a single major gift can support care long after the initial announcement. The centre is more than a treatment facility. The hospital describes it as a safe and welcoming environment for people affected by cancer, offering patients, families, friends, and carers access to support, information, practical help, and a place to talk. That broader support matters because cancer affects more than the person receiving treatment. Families often need guidance on appointments, side effects, emotional wellbeing, and practical decisions during an already stressful period.

Ongoing care in 2026

The centre continues to operate as a key part of Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s cancer services. In September 2026, the hospital announced that some outpatient services at the Clara Brathwaite Centre would be temporarily relocated for a comprehensive deep cleaning of the department.

During that period, routine clinics, radiation oncology, and chemotherapy services were moved to temporary areas, with the hospital chapel serving as the main waiting area.

The hospital said its oncology team contacted patients to confirm or reschedule appointments as needed. The temporary relocation was presented as a maintenance measure rather than a closure. It underscores that the centre remains active and that the hospital continues to invest in keeping its cancer-care environment safe for patients.

From personal grief to public good

Rihanna’s contribution began with the loss of her grandmother, but it became a long-term investment in Barbados’ healthcare system. The centre named after Clara Brathwaite has continued to provide radiotherapy, chemotherapy-related oncology services, nuclear medicine, and support for patients and families. The story is a reminder that philanthropy can have effects far beyond a headline moment. A donation made in memory of one woman has helped shape cancer care for patients across Barbados for more than a decade. For Rihanna, the gift was a way to honour “Gran Gran Dolly.” For patients receiving treatment at the Clara Brathwaite Centre, it has become part of a continuing system of care that offers treatment, information, and support when they need it most.
