Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) Plc has strengthened its air cargo security infrastructure with the deployment of advanced dual-view X-ray screening and trace-detection systems, reinforcing its capacity to detect prohibited items, identify potential security threats and enhance compliance with aviation cargo security protocols.
The Chairman of SAHCO Plc, Dr Taiwo Afolabi, disclosed this at the company’s Cargo Stakeholders Forum, held recently at the Marriott Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, where he emphasised the need for strict cargo screening, regulatory compliance and coordinated security procedures across Nigeria’s aviation cargo value chain.
Afolabi, who was represented by SAHCO’s Managing Director, Mrs Adenike Aboderin, said the company’s investments in screening technology, handling equipment and cargo infrastructure were designed to improve operational efficiency while strengthening the security and integrity of shipments moving through the nation’s airports.
He noted that air cargo security required collective responsibility among ground handling companies, airlines, freight forwarders, cargo agents, regulatory agencies, importers, exporters and other service providers to ensure that consignments were subjected to appropriate security controls before acceptance and onward movement.
According to him, the growing complexity of international trade and the increasing demand for secure, time-sensitive cargo transportation made effective screening systems and strict adherence to established safety procedures indispensable to the competitiveness of Nigeria’s aviation logistics industry.
“The air cargo sector plays a vital role in facilitating international trade, connecting markets, supporting businesses and contributing to economic development. In today’s interconnected global economy, the speed, reliability, security and efficiency of cargo operations are critical to the competitiveness of businesses and the growth of our nation,” he said.
Afolabi identified the introduction of a dual-view X-ray machine and an Explosive Trace Detection (ETD) system as part of the company’s recent equipment upgrades aimed at strengthening its cargo screening capabilities.
The dual-view X-ray technology provides screening personnel with images from two viewing angles, potentially improving the identification and assessment of suspicious objects within consignments.
The trace-detection system is designed to identify minute traces of targeted substances, including explosive residues, subject to the equipment’s configuration and approved operating procedures.
The technologies are intended to complement established cargo acceptance, inspection and security-control procedures, with screening outcomes informing further examination where necessary.
The chairman said the investments reflected SAHCO’s commitment to cargo security, regulatory compliance and the protection of consignments entrusted to its care. He added that modern equipment must be supported by competent personnel, strict adherence to safety protocols and effective communication among industry stakeholders.
He stressed that the effectiveness of cargo security depended not only on the availability of screening equipment but also on consistent operational discipline and cooperation among parties responsible for processing and handling shipments.
Beyond screening technology, SAHCO has expanded its operational capacity with the acquisition of a 16-tonne forklift to facilitate the movement of heavy and oversized consignments.
“In furtherance of our operational efficiency objectives, we have added a 16-tonne forklift to our equipment fleet. This addition strengthens our capacity to handle heavy and oversized consignments, improve cargo movement, and support more efficient loading, offloading and cargo-handling operations,” Afolabi said.
The company has also enhanced its cold-chain handling capabilities for temperature-sensitive consignments, including pharmaceutical products and perishable goods, to help preserve cargo integrity and minimise the risk of temperature-related damage during ground handling.
Afolabi said SAHCO had further expanded its cargo build-up operational area to optimise workflow, improve space utilisation and accommodate increasing cargo volumes.
He, however, maintained that investments in infrastructure and equipment must be matched by a skilled workforce, effective operational controls and adherence to applicable security and safety requirements.
The forum provided a platform for industry stakeholders to examine operational bottlenecks, review service-delivery concerns and identify practical measures to reduce cargo turnaround times, improve security standards and strengthen trade facilitation.
