The New York Yankees have made an important decision regarding their MLB coaching staff, locking up one of their most valuable coaches while leaving Aaron Boone’s long-term future unchanged.

The move comes shortly after the Yankees confirmed that Boone will return as manager for the 2027 season. However, Boone did not receive a new extension and is currently entering the final guaranteed season of his contract.

Matt Blake earns another three-year deal
Keeping Blake was a major priority for the Yankees after another impressive season from the pitching staff. New York led MLB with a 3.23 ERA during the 2026 regular season despite significant injuries to Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, Carlos Rodón and Ryan Weathers. The bullpen also finished near the top of the league, posting a 3.13 ERA.
Blake has been New York’s pitching coach since 2020 after joining the organization with no previous major-league coaching experience. Since then, he has become an important part of the Yankees’ pitching-development operation, helping the organization maximize both established starters and less-heralded bullpen arms.
His latest season only strengthened his case for another long-term commitment. The Yankees dealt with major rotation injuries but still produced MLB’s best pitching staff, while Cam Schlittler emerged as one of the league’s top young starters.
Aaron Boone returns without an extension

The Blake extension creates an interesting contrast with the situation surrounding Boone.
The Yankees have already decided that Boone will manage the team in 2027, giving him a 10th season at the helm. But unlike Blake, Boone has not received a new contract. His current deal runs through 2027, meaning next season is presently the final guaranteed year of his contract.
That distinction could become one of the bigger storylines surrounding the Yankees throughout the 2027 season.
Ownership has continued to express confidence in Boone, with Hal Steinbrenner placing much of the blame for the Yankees’ disappointing postseason exit on the position players and offensive inconsistency rather than the manager.
For now, the Yankees have made their priorities clear: Matt Blake is staying for three more years, while Boone will have to enter 2027 without the security of a new extension.
