After six months and six days, the New York Knicks will be taking the court in Madison Square Garden as NBA champions for the first time in 53 years. The crowd at the Mecca of Basketball is expected to go crazy over the Knicks after they ended such a lengthy championship drought.
Moreover, the Knicks will be hosting one of the most hyped-up contenders heading into the 2026-27 season, the Philadelphia 76ers, for their season-opener, which should lead to plenty of subplots in and of itself. The 76ers stacked the roster this past offseason after trading away Paul George and a few draft assets to bring in Jaylen Brown, which then convinced LeBron James to join in free agency.
Arguably, the 76ers have the most talented top five players in the league at present. A few experts and some fans believe that they have what it takes to mount a challenge for the Knicks’ throne. But New York isn’t simply going to relinquish their perch at the top of the NBA mountain, and they should be raring to flex their championship muscle over a team that will be gunning for their crown.

This Opening Night tilt between the Knicks and 76ers will be televised on NBC and will tip off at approximately 7:00 PM E.T. Here are a few predictions for what should be an interesting clash between two strong sides that should expect to run into one another come postseason time.
Jalen Brunson wastes no time in reaching the 40-point mark
Heading into the 2026-27 campaign, it’s fair enough to expect the Knicks to start off the season on a bit of a slow note. After all, they had a grueling run to the title last season. While they were utterly dominant from Game 4 of their first-round clash against the Atlanta Hawks until the end of the Eastern Conference Finals, they had to mount comebacks on four separate occasions in the NBA Finals, taking advantage of the San Antonio Spurs’ inexperience.
The fatigue and the championship hangover could potentially affect the Knicks, especially when they will receive their championship rings and hang banner number three on Opening Night. The emotional nature of this night could potentially put New York at a disadvantage against a hungry 76ers team that will look to embarrass the reigning champions during what is supposed to be a night of celebration.
But Jalen Brunson, the reigning NBA Finals MVP, isn’t exactly someone who is fazed by anything. In fact, he relishes the opportunity to show out in a grand stage, and Opening Night against a stacked 76ers team is quite the opportunity for him to announce to the NBA world that the Knicks aren’t simply going to roll over during their title defense season.
Brunson recorded 45 points to secure the title for the Knicks in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. With the MSG crowd roaring behind him, Brunson should be at his best on Tuesday night, recording at least 40 points as he puts the 76ers defense to the sword.
LeBron James fails to score over 10 points
It caused quite the big hullabaloo when James’ 10-point streak ended on December 4, 2025. James chose to pass up an opportunity to extend his streak and gave the ball to Rui Hachimura, who then knocked down a three at the buzzer to give the Los Angeles Lakers the win. James had scored at least 10 points in 1,297 consecutive games prior to that sacrificial act of his.
He would then score in double figures in each of his final 54 games of the regular season, and he was brilliant for the Lakers in the playoffs amid Luka Doncic’s absence. However, for the 76ers, James is about to play his lowest-usage role yet.
James’ presence should always command respect, and even the 76ers’ other stars could benefit from a bit of deferral to the 41-year-old star, especially when it comes to making decisions. But this Philly team doesn’t need James to put the ball through the basket. Embiid, Brown, and Maxey combined to average 83.9 points per game last season, and James will have to play his most passing-oriented role yet to maximize the scoring talent he has at his disposal.
With James and the 76ers still acclimating to one another, expect the 41-year-old to be extremely selective in hunting his own shot — limiting his scoring tally for Opening Night to below his customary 10 points.
76ers will need time to iron the kinks, lose by double digits
Considering how ball-dominant the 76ers’ stars are, this team will need plenty of time to iron the kinks. Brown had a usage of 36.2% last year as the first option with the Boston Celtics. Embiid had a usage rate of 33.5%. Meanwhile, Maxey, arguably the 76ers’ best player, had a 29.4% usage. Even James, who was the third option behind Doncic and Austin Reaves, had a usage of 27.2%.
This is not to say that pairing players who are accustomed to having the ball in their hands cannot work. But even the best of superteams need time to get used to each other. Even the 2011 Miami Heat, following the blockbuster signing of James in free agency, lost their Opening Night clash against the Boston Celtics and started the season 8-7.
Meanwhile, the Knicks have had excellent continuity. Their starting lineup is entering its third full season together, and the skillsets of their core players are much more complementary in nature than the 76ers’.
All of this is to say that the 76ers will get off to a slow start on Opening Night and cause a bit of panic on social media after losing by double digits to the Knicks. But Philly should be very good this year. After all, acquiring this kind of top-shelf talent should give them the requisite personnel to get them through an 82-game grind, keeping their veteran core healthy for the playoffs.
On the other hand, the Knicks should be the toast of social media after taking care of business on Opening Night and starting their title defense on the best note possible.
