Country music legend's heartbreaking final encounter before death at 71

Blake Shelton shared the words he is grateful he said to John Anderson during their final meeting, just three days before the country music legend's death.

Following the news that John had died on Wednesday, October 21, aged 71, Blake posted a photograph of them smiling together and reflected on losing both a musical hero and a friend.

"There is too much for me to say about @johnanderson in just a statement. I am sick and I am stunned. But I am a very lucky man," he wrote.

"I got the opportunity to find out that my hero wasn't just the guy I hoped he'd be. He was so much more than that. John was my friend."

The pair had seen each other at the Country Music Hall of Fame's Medallion Ceremony in Nashville on Sunday, October 18. Blake had no idea it would be their last encounter.

"I got to see him last Sunday and I don't even know why but I told him I loved him. That is what fills my heart in this moment," he continued. "My love and prayers go out to John's family. This one really hurts."

Tim McGraw remembers final evening with John Anderson

Blake was not the only singer remembering a conversation with John at Sunday's ceremony. Tim McGraw, who was among the artists being inducted that evening, also shared a photograph with the country star and recalled the pleasure of spending time together.

"We talked, we laughed, we sang his songs that I loved so much together, just goofing off," Tim wrote on Instagram.

Gwen Stefani and Reba McEntire also joined the tributes, reflecting the affection for John across generations of performers. His distinctive voice had made songs including "Swingin'," "Straight Tequila Night" and "Seminole Wind" enduring country favorites.

John Anderson's family announces his death at 71

John's family said he died peacefully in his sleep. No cause of death has been announced. He is survived by his wife, Jamie, daughters Alexa and Brionna, and their families.

His career began far from the honors he would eventually receive. After leaving Florida for Nashville in 1972, John took construction work while pursuing his musical ambitions.

One of those jobs involved helping build the Grand Ole Opry House, where he worked on the roof before eventually realizing his dream of performing on its stage.

He went on to release more than 20 albums and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2024.

For his family, however, the announcement of his death focused on the man they knew away from the stage. "He was the heart of our family, the one who made us laugh, loved us fiercely and made every ordinary moment feel special."
