President Salva Kiir had appointed Gatluak to the caretaker governorship of Jonglei State via a presidential Republican Decree on September 22, 2026.
He wasted little time assuming administrative duties and began assembling his state cabinet in early October. What had not yet taken place was a formal public reception befitting his new office, until he made up for it in spectacular fashion.
A Convoy That Stopped Viewers in Their Tracks
Video footage of the event showed a procession of white, silver and black SUVs that appeared to fill the entire road from one end to the other.
The lead vehicle, fitted with a siren and security detail, moved ahead of three cars in close formation, the middle one flying a flag and flashing its headlights in a display of authority. The rest of the motorcade followed in steady, synchronised motion.
A wider shot in the clip revealed just how far back the trail of vehicles extended, leaving viewers online both impressed and deeply unsettled in equal measure.
Netizens React With Praise and Sharp Criticism
The video triggered a wave of responses online, ranging from warm congratulations to pointed frustration about priorities in a state battling poverty and poor infrastructure.
Duop Roam Kok wrote:
"Congratulations E.H Moses Majok Gatluak the caretaker governor for Jonglei State."
Molarity Ta Bna Intellectual added:
"The two caretakers, Majok and Ngong, congratulations and all the best, sir."
Not everyone was celebratory. A commenter going by Rain remarked:
"All this show for a guy who is going to do a lot of nothing. Whoever bewitched South Sudan, we are sorry, please forgive us."
Sandy Pipino raised questions about unpaid government workers, writing:
"And I'll repeat, they haven't paid embassy staff in Nairobi because the money doesn't seem to reach here. Then you see such stunts, loool. In short, ukifanya job or businesses na hao, be ready not to get paid."
Darkskinned_Nilote was equally blunt:
"Jonglei state is struggling with malnutrition, poor roads, dilapidated health care facilities and poverty. But caretaker Ako loaded kwani yy anatoa wapi Doo?"
DonKeish offered perhaps the most pointed observation:
"A whole adult brain that doesn't reason out how stupid this is really explains it all. No wonder people constantly war and conflict because how are reasonable, hardworking people supposed to take this?"
The spectacle has done little to settle questions about governance in Jonglei State, even as Governor Gatluak settles into his new role.
Salva Kiir directs South Sudan Officials to seek permission before travelling
In other news, TUKO.co.ke also highlighted facts about Salva Kiir’s directive requiring South Sudanese officials holding constitutional offices to seek his permission before travelling abroad, and his recent visits to Kenya and South Africa.
South Sudan is aiming to hold its first general election since independence in December 2026.
The vote would be a landmark step for a country still navigating a fragile peace process after years of civil conflict.
