Shillong, Oct 12: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has advocated setting up mini-secretariats across the state to make government services more accessible and reduce the burden of travelling long distances for routine administrative work.
Highlighting the challenges faced by residents, particularly those in remote areas, Sangma said people often have to travel to different administrative centres to access government services. These journeys can involve travelling from villages to block headquarters, such as Jirang, to district headquarters in Nongpoh, or even to the state capital, Shillong.
“Why should a citizen have to travel for some other service to Shillong, and for something else to Nongpoh, and for something else to Jirang block? I don’t think it’s fair,” Sangma said.
The Chief Minister said ordinary citizens often lack the time, money and transport facilities needed to make repeated trips to different offices for separate administrative requirements.
Under the proposed mini-secretariat model, the government aims to bring essential public services together under one roof at localised centres. The initiative is intended to create single-window service hubs closer to rural communities, helping residents access multiple government services without having to travel to different administrative headquarters.
Sangma stressed that the administration should make services more accessible by bringing government offices and systems closer to the people.
“The service should come to them; the office and the system should come to them,” he said.
The proposed model reflects the state government’s push towards decentralised and citizen-centric governance. By consolidating services at local hubs, the initiative aims to reduce travel costs, administrative delays and the difficulties faced by people seeking routine government documentation and other services.
The government’s proposed approach seeks to make public service delivery more convenient, particularly for residents of remote and rural areas.
