Mets have perfect first baseman to pursue, even if he’s far from what Pete Alonso is originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
If the New York Mets land Tarik Skubal, they'll have a lot of other things to consider from top to bottom.
For the Mets, one of the biggest concerns is adding Skubal and not doing what's necessary for the rest of the roster. Over the past couple of years, it feels like when the Mets make that big move, which they have done multiple times, they fail to make the small ones needed to put the team in a position to win a World Series.
Whether those small moves didn't work out or the Mets just aren't that good at making them is one thing, but the reality is that adding Skubal doesn't necessarily mean the Mets will even be a playoff team.
More is needed, and one writer from The Athletic recently outlined a couple of ways to get there. He brought up the possibility of signing Skubal and what could happen beyond that.
“Adding Skubal to the top of the rotation means you can spend a little less on your mid-rotation arm — more like the Tyler Mahle bucket than the Clay Holmes bucket.
“That would leave about $30 million for the offense and the bullpen. You can sign Ty France as your primary first baseman and then bring in two mid-level leverage relievers (like Milwaukee’s JoJo Romero and Arizona’s Jonathan Loaisiga),” Tim Britton wrote.
Ty France is coming off a really impressive year with the San Diego Padres, though there were recent concerns that he was going to retire.
After an improved season that helped revive his career, he could be interested in returning to San Diego. At the same time, if the Mets have a decent offer out there for him, he could be what they're missing offensively, especially at first base.
