Cycle News
Do you ever wonder how different prototype racers really are from their production-based siblings? How well your skills at street driving would translate to something like a GT3 car, compared to a full F1 chassis? The lucky folks at Cycle News got to answer the two-wheeled version of that question earlier this year, when they rode Nicolo Bulega's WorldSBK Ducati Panigale V4 R back to back with Marc Marquez's MotoGP Ducati Desmosedici GP26. I'm not jealous at all.
The folks from Cycle News were invited out to a Ducati owner day, where the (presumably most well-off) fans of sporty Italian bikes got to turn laps of Misano World Circuit on both the WorldSBK Panigale and the MotoGP GP26. Both bikes have functional aero elements, big temperature-dependent brakes, and even V4 engines, so Cycle News set out to figure out just how different the two bikes are. As it turns out, they're more different than they are similar, and it comes down to far more than just power and weight.
More differences than similarities
Using Ducatis for the test provided a rare opportunity for Cycle World, as both bikes use V4 powerplants — the standard engine layout in MotoGP, but a much less common design in the production-based WorldSBK. With one engine layout between street and track, the WorldSBK Panigale apparently felt very similar to the road bike that shares its frame. Faster and lighter, sure, but functionally very similar.
The MotoGP bike, however, was another beast entirely. The specific preparation of this GP26 wasn't what Marquez would ride at Misano — the brakes had been swapped from carbon discs to steel, for better function at lower temperatures, the ride height device had been disabled for simplicity, and the Cycle News reporter suspected the engine power had been dialed down — but it was still a world of difference from the Panigale. Lighter on its feet, faster through the straights and faster to a stop despite higher top speeds, it's an altogether more capable machine. Its fragile seamless gearbox, though, means it's stressful and persnickety to ride. One wrong move, and you'll blow up the bike.
Most of us who are capable riders on the street could at least wrap our heads around a WorldSBK bike — we probably wouldn't match Nicolo Bulega's pace, but we likely wouldn't hurt ourselves either. Throw us the keys to a MotoGP bike, though, and we'd be lucky to bring it back in one piece.
