Michael's first foray into the world of high-profile romance was with Kate Beckinsale, the daughter of famous actor Richard. The couple dated for eight years after they first met in a touring production of The Seagull back in 1995. Months after starting their relationship, they moved in together, and the couple welcomed their daughter, Lily.
In 2003, the couple moved to Los Angeles together, but the move spelt trouble for the lovebirds. Although Kate landed her partner a role in Underworld, which proved to be her breakout film, they split during production, and she moved on with the film's director, Len Wiseman.
Addressing their break-up on Changes with Annie McManus, Michael shared: "Going through that experience of a relationship breaking down and having a young child, and then because of my daughter and her mum living in another country, having to make a life in a new place whilst going through that whole experience which is difficult enough.
"I had no work visa to stay in America, so every time I left, I had to go back to Britain. I never knew if I would be allowed to come back in again. So, I ended up having to get work in Britain because I wasn't really getting any work in America. It really made me question certain things about myself."

While filming Midnight in Paris, Michael crossed paths with Mean Girls actress Rachel McAdams, and despite their 10-year age difference, romance soon blossomed between the pair.
The duo insisted that nothing happened between the two of them until filming wrapped, but speaking about the time they spent together in the French capital, Michael told Us Weekly: "We spent our nights really laughing and walking around Paris — Notre Dame is my favourite spot — and having great meals. It was a great way to get to know anyone."
The couple split in 2013, with a source telling Page Six that they had differing views on their future together, with Rachel wanting to start her own family, while Michael was happy to focus on his career and the daughter he shared with Kate.

Michael's next relationship was with Hollywood star and comedian Sarah Silverman. The couple met in 2014 when they were both filming Masters of Sex, in which Michael starred as Dr. William Masters.
However, in 2018, Sarah revealed that the duo had "consciously uncoupled", poking fun at the phrase famously used by Gwyneth Paltrow about the end of her own marriage.
Speaking to The Daily Telegraph about the split, Michael said: "After the Brexit vote, and the election where Trump became president, we both felt in different ways we wanted to get more involved."
He added: "I felt a responsibility to do something, but it [meant] coming back [to Britain] - which was difficult for us, because we were very important to each other. But we both acknowledge that each of us had to do what we needed to do."
