Everyone knew that Ross Wilkes (Ian Burfield) was going to cause trouble on Coronation Street. You could see it from space.
His very first scenes on the Street revealed that the sinister ex-Squaddie slept with Tyrone Dobbs’ (Alan Halsall) mum Cassie Plummer (Claire Sweeney) when she was underage, taking advantage of her homelessness and heroin addiction to sleep with her for money. Tyrone was the product of that night.
Ross also made it clear that he hadn’t changed in all those years, laying all the blame at Cassie’s door and lambasting her with sexist insults for drinking so much.
However when Hope Stape (Isabella Flanagan) and Ruby Dobbs (Billie Naylor) decided to arrange a reunion for Tyrone and his long lost father, Ross played the part of the doting dad making up for lost time.
However, his nice guy act obviously didn’t wash with Cassie – so of course, she had to go. When she tried to spike his smoothie so he’d fail his drug test and lose his job at the prison, Ross outsmarted her by tricking his girlfriend Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford) into drinking the poisoned brew instead.
After a disgusted Tyrone took his dad’s side and disowned his mum, Cassie left Weatherfield broken-hearted.
Just when we thought Ross couldn’t get any worse, he gave her a lift and then drove off with a terrified Cassie in the passenger seat, suggesting that he very well might have murdered her.
Nobody suspects Ross of killing Cassie yet, but Fiz (Jennie McAlpine) certainly doesn’t trust Ross as far as she can throw him.
No wonder. She found Cassie’s treasured family photograph in Ross’s wallet and immediately expected foul play. But while Ross was able to spin an excuse that Tyrone swallowed hook, like and sinker, Fizz remained privately suss, but didn’t want to rock the boat.
That’s all about to change.
Coronation Street has already revealed that Ross’s toxic masculinity will cause tensions in Fiz and Ty’s marriage. Now we’ll see him have a negative affect on little Dorin (Henry Nye Meller) too.
Son of Tyrone and his ex-girlfriend Alina Pop (Ruxandra Porojnicu), Dorin was left at the Dobbs’ door while his mum looked after her ailing mother back in Romania. Fiz has taken on Dorin like her own son, so she’s not going to be too happy to discover that Ross is putting the little lad in harm’s way.
‘Harm’s way’ is putting it lighting, as next week’s trip to Weatherfield sees Ross encouraging Dorin to be violent.
Friday’s episode saw Ross invite Tyrone to an evening at a local boxing gym. When Ross suggested they take Dorin along too, Tyrone’s not sure but Ross insists.
Returning home, Ross suggested to Tyrone they should go every week but was left annoyed when Tyrone turned him down.
Next week, Ross isn’t giving up as he calls at the garage and shows Tyrone the boxing gloves he’s bought for Dorin, pointing out that it’ll give him a chance to bond with his grandson.
Later, Ross forces Dorin to have a go at boxing. Dorin doesn’t like it.
Needless to say, Ross soon turns on Tyrone and drags his son up for an impromptu fight instead.
Neither Tyrone or Dorin enjoy Ross’s boxing. This is clearly just the start of something far, far worse…
