James McAvoy quit alcohol after he started drinking too much during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
The X-men star has admitted being forced to stay at home "changed" his relationship with booze and he knew it was time to give up when he found himself drinking alone.
During an appearance on Chelsea Handler's Dear Chelsea podcast, he explained: "Before that time in my life [the pandemic], I would never think to have alcohol in the house. I’d never buy it.
"I’d drink like a fish sometimes when we’re out on a night out. Or, if there were people coming over, I’d make sure we had wine and beer or whatever. I’d never think to just, like, have stuff to make drink-drinks in the house, and during lockdown that changed ...
"[It] was always a social thing for me. It was always like. 'When I’m with people, I can have a drink and that’s great'. ... It just started to be like, I would have a drink on my own. And it didn’t get like crazy, crazy bad, but I was like: 'I need to nip this in the bud'."
James went on to reveal he quit drinking by going "cold turkey" and it "wasn't a struggle", but he did find there were times when he missed drinking especially when he was going through a period of "emotional stress".
He added: "That’s when I’m like: 'Oh my God, I could do with a f****** three fingers of vodka."
However, James is now much happier sober as he's able to "connect" with his life more, saying: "I am finding the more and more I’m older, I’m not looking for an altered state, because I’m more and more comfortable in my state.
"One of the things that not drinking has done is make me realise what the substance of alcohol was taking away and my ability to enjoy the little things ... the unexciting things.
"'Cause not everything that’s great and fun and enjoyable in life is exciting. It’s not adrenaline-fueled necessarily. But because of the level of sort of adrenaline I was chasing, 'cause I was constantly spiking my adrenaline with a substance.
"It was making the enjoyable stuff that isn’t adrenalised really hard to connect with ... [After quitting alcohol] I was able to just connect with my life again a bit more.
"I’m actually a bit scared of f****** with that."
