Mezo has given holders of swBTC and USDe a firm deadline. Anyone still holding those tokens on the Bitcoin-focused protocol has until October 13, 2026 to bridge them out.
Bridge-in support for both assets was suspended immediately when the change was announced on September 11. New deposits are blocked, and the only remaining option is withdrawal.
What Mezo is shutting down
The first round of cuts targeted two ERC-20 tokens: swBTC, issued by Swell, and USDe, issued by Ethena. ERC-20 is the standard format for tokens on Ethereum. A bridge carries those tokens over to a different network, much like a currency exchange booth at a border crossing.
On September 29, Mezo widened the cleanup. It announced that solvBTC and xsolvBTC would get the same treatment. That brings the list to four tokens, and deposits are already suspended for all of them.
A bigger change sits alongside the token cuts. Native BTC bridge-in to Mezo is also set to close permanently on October 13. For a protocol built around Bitcoin, ending the direct on-ramp for actual Bitcoin is a notable move.
Users are being told to withdraw through the Mezo app before the cutoff. Holdings left behind after deprecation risk becoming inaccessible.
Why these tokens got the axe
Mezo’s reasoning is simple: almost nobody was using these bridges. DefiLlama data backs that up.
USDe and mUSDe each show around $1.87k in bridged volume on Mezo. Combined, those figures come to under $4,000.
Running a bridge is not free, even when traffic is light. Each supported asset requires ongoing maintenance, monitoring and security attention. When usage sits in the four-figure range, the cost-benefit math tilts quickly toward shutting it off.
Mezo says it wants to concentrate on higher-usage services and products. Trimming dead weight is the first visible step of that shift.
An unrelated exploit adds noise
On October 5, an exploit hit Mezo and drained approximately 5.52 BTC from 37 veBTC positions. veBTC refers to vote-escrowed Bitcoin, a structure where users lock assets in exchange for governance or reward rights.
That incident did not drive the bridge plan. The token suspensions were announced on September 11 and September 29, both weeks before the exploit occurred. The two events overlap on the calendar but stand apart in cause.
Background: what Mezo does
Mezo positions itself as an economic layer for Bitcoin. It is a Bitcoin-backed platform that offers collateralized lending and stablecoin issuance.
Wrapped and liquid-staked Bitcoin tokens like swBTC, solvBTC and xsolvBTC represent claims on Bitcoin that can move across other chains. In practice, the Mezo versions of these routes did not see much traffic.
What this means for users and the market
The immediate stakeholders are the people still holding any of the four tokens on Mezo. Their task is straightforward: withdraw before October 13. Given the tiny bridged volumes, the affected group is likely small, but small groups still lose money if they miss deadlines.
For token issuers like Swell, Ethena and Solv, losing a low-volume integration is a minor event. Routes that move under $4,000 do little for actual adoption.
Anyone with assets on Mezo should check their balances now. October 13 is the date that matters, and the protocol has made clear it is not planning to extend the welcome mat.
