MONROVIA, October 21, 2026: The United Nations in Liberia, in collaboration with the Government of Liberia, will commemorate the 81st anniversary of the United Nations on Monday, October 26, 2026, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Monrovia.
UN Resident Coordinator Christine Umutoni made the announcement during the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing, explaining that although UN Day is observed globally on October 24, Liberia will hold its celebration on October 26 because the anniversary falls on a weekend.
Umutoni said this year’s celebration will be held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the first time, reflecting the longstanding partnership between Liberia and the United Nations.
“This is really a reflection of the strong and enduring partnership between Liberia and the United Nations, reaffirming our shared commitment to peace, development, human rights, and international cooperation,” she said.
She noted that the commemoration comes at a significant moment as Liberia serves as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
According to her, Liberia’s election to the Council reflects the country’s progress in peacebuilding, democracy and international engagement.
Umutoni said the celebration will provide an opportunity to reflect on Liberia’s transition from conflict to peace, recovery and development, while highlighting remaining challenges, particularly youth unemployment, social cohesion and sustainable development.
The program will feature remarks from government officials, cultural performances, exhibitions and presentations by young people under the theme “The Liberia We Want by 2030.”
She emphasized that many young Liberians were born after the country’s civil conflicts and are more concerned about employment, economic opportunities and a stable future.
“For them, Liberia is a country that is looking towards the future. For them, Liberia is a country that is serving at the Security Council and forging global partnership,” Umutoni stated.
The UN Resident Coordinator reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting Liberia’s development priorities, including peace, equality, human dignity and economic opportunities.
She called on Liberians, civil society organizations, the media and government institutions to participate in the celebration.
“Let us continue to look towards celebrating achievements, strengthening multilateralism and our shared commitment to build a more peaceful, inclusive and prosperous future,” she concluded.
