Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, has joined high-level consultations between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) in Dakar, Senegal.
The talks mark a major diplomatic effort to restore constructive engagement following the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the regional bloc.
Co-chaired by Senegal’s Minister of African Integration, Foreign Affairs, and Senegalese Abroad, Cheikh Niang, alongside ECOWAS Chief Negotiator Dr. Lansana Kouyaté, the discussions center on establishing institutional and legal frameworks to govern future relations between ECOWAS and the AES. Delegations are focusing on mutual understanding, regional stability, and preserving the deep historical, economic, and social ties connecting West African and Sahelian nations.
The Dakar dialogue represents a key milestone in addressing emerging geopolitical shifts through diplomacy and structured cooperation. Participating representatives are working to pinpoint common priorities and draft practical mechanisms for collaboration, despite the region’s evolving political landscape.
Sierra Leone’s involvement highlights its ongoing dedication to West African integration, peacebuilding, and diplomatic resolution. Building on the momentum from previous ECOWAS leadership roles and the mid-year summits held in Lungi, Minister Swaray’s participation reaffirms Freetown’s belief in dialogue as the primary tool for settling regional disputes and advancing shared economic goals.
The progress achieved during the Dakar meetings is expected to shape follow-up negotiations leading into the statutory ECOWAS End-of-Year Summit scheduled for December. Heads of State and Government will review the consultative outcomes and consider formal measures to solidify the framework between both regional bodies.
Regional observers view the initiative as a crucial step toward bridging division, reinforcing institutional ties, and safeguarding collective security and economic prosperity across West Africa.
