From Stanley Uzoaru, Owerri
When a 40-foot container arrived at the Ogbor Uvuru community in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, last Thursday, it did not just carry medical equipment. For many rural communities in the state, it carried hope.
Inside the container was a consignment of modern medical equipment valued at $7.3 million, donated by the Canadian government to the Hope Rising for Imolites Foundation, founded and financed by Imo real estate billionaire and philanthropist, Chief Success Obioma Akagburuonye.
In a state where access to diagnostic machines and life-saving tools remains a luxury for many private hospitals in the hinterland, the donation is nothing short of a lifeline.
The equipment, comprising scanning machines, ventilators, diagnostic sets, surgical instruments, and other essential medical supplies, is earmarked for distribution to 32 carefully selected private hospitals spread across the 27 local government areas of Imo State.
The formal opening of the container at the Foundation’s National Secretariat was a mix of official procedure and community celebration. Officials of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the Nigeria Customs Service, representatives of the Imo State Government, traditional leaders, doctors, and political stakeholders gathered to witness the inspection.
Leading the exercise, Chief Akagburuonye explained that the donation was a product of trust -the Canadian government entrusting his foundation to strengthen Imo’s fragile healthcare architecture at the grassroots.
For transparency, he said, each beneficiary hospital was invited to identify and confirm the equipment they had requested before the official handover.
“The donors want to supervise it and make sure that there is no diversion,” Akagburuonye told the crowd. “That day, after the internment of my mother, when we get here, they will call your name, and you will see where we have already arranged your own medical equipment. You will then take delivery.”
The official unveiling and distribution has been fixed for November 7, 2026 – a date he said was symbolic. It coincides with the burial of his mother, Ezinne Monica Nwafor Akagburuonye-Amuchie, after Canadian representatives, including the Ambassador and the Minister of Health, indicated they could not attend two separate ceremonies in Nigeria. With songs of praise, Akagburuonye declared the container open, praying for a hitch-free process.
Confirming due process, Mr. Nelson Onuoha of NAFDAC, Abia-Imo operations, said his team was on ground on the directive of his superiors to certify and verify the consignment before distribution. For doctors on the frontline, the intervention was timely.
Representing the three senatorial zones, Dr. Shaazuar Korie (Owerri), Dr. Kellechi Omende (Okigwe) and Dr. Ndubuisi Enweremadu (Orlu) described the donation as a game-changer for rural healthcare.
“In rural communities where access to modern medical equipment remains a challenge, this will improve healthcare delivery significantly,” they noted.
Dr. Korie, speaking on behalf of his colleagues, pledged loyalty beyond medicine: “We, the medical practitioners, promise that as far as you, Akagburuonye, have always been in philanthropic collaborative partnership with us, we will always identify with you in all sociopolitical and economic endeavours.”
Political stakeholders present, including APC Owerri Zonal Chairman, Sir Justice Ogu, Dr. Chris Ekwueme, Mrs. Ijeoma Azuike and Dr. Humble Chimaobi, praised the real estate mogul for complementing Governor Hope Uzodimma’s developmental agenda.
Ogu linked the gesture to the emerging Owerri Zone leadership conversation, noting that Governor Uzodimma’s promise that his successor will come from Owerri Zone places a responsibility on credible leaders from the zone to show capacity.
“As all of you may know, His Excellency, the Governor of Imo State, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma, has promised that his successor will come from the Owerri Zone. We are presenting our best and brightest for the world to see,” Ogu said.
The $7.3 million equipment is not an isolated act. According to Dr. Chimaobi, Akagburuonye’s foundation has, in the last three years, facilitated free medical services for over 10,000 Imolites – from optometry to minor and major surgeries.
Since 2021, the foundation has also trained and empowered over 12,000 youths from the 27 LGAs in solar panel installation, CCTV and inverter systems, and other vocational skills. The latest batch of 322 graduates just completed their training.
“I wish to support the good work our God-given governor is doing in Imo State. He has laid a good foundation, and we have to build on it,” Akagburuonye said.
Among the listed beneficiary hospitals are Winnie’s Hospital Limited, Isiala Mbano; Mbano Joint Hospital; Grace Medical Centre, Owerri Municipal; Hometown Missionary Hospital; Christ the King Hospital, Ideato South; Christ Foundation and Maternity, Awo-Idemili; Jonai Maternity and Nursing Home, Isu; McDonald Hospital, Awomama; Immaculate Heart Hospital, Umuokirika, Ahiazu Mbaise; Aladinma Umuzuruike Community Hospital; St. Joseph Medical Services, Aboh Mbaise, and New Creation Hospital and Maternity, Obilubi, Mbaitoli, among others.
When the distribution happens on November 7, the expectation is clear: shorter travel times for patients seeking scans, better equipped emergency rooms, and rural hospitals that can finally handle complications they once referred to Owerri.
For Akagburuonye, the billionaire who made his name in real estate, his biggest investment may yet be in the health of his people.
