Muchinga Province Permanent Secretary, Tuesday Bwalya has called on Zambians to uphold unity, peace, hard work and integrity as the country commemorates its 62nd Independence Anniversary.
Dr Bwalya said Independence Day is an important reminder of the freedom the country enjoys and the collective responsibility of citizens to contribute to national development.
He said this during the Independence Day flag-hoisting ceremony at Chinsali Municipal Council.
Dr Bwalya said Zambia attained independence on October 24, 1964, following the courage and sacrifices of freedom fighters and founding leaders who fought for the country’s liberation.
He said the nation should continue to honour those who contributed to the country’s independence by working towards a peaceful, united and prosperous Zambia.
He also explained to the audience the meaning of all the colours on the Zambian flag.
“Our flag tells our story. The green color reminds us of our land and natural resources, the red recalls the struggle for freedom, the black represents the people of Zambia, while the orange stands for our mineral wealth,” he said.
Dr Bwalya added that the eagle on the national flag symbolises freedom and the country’s ability to rise above challenges.
He said the national flag should serve as a reminder of the country’s motto, “One Zambia, One Nation,” which calls on citizens to promote unity and peaceful coexistence.
“As we hoist the flag today, let us renew our commitment to unity, peace, hard work and integrity. Let us respect our laws, protect public property, care for our communities and give young people hope and opportunity,” Dr Bwalya said.
He said independence should not only be regarded as a day of celebration but also as a responsibility for every citizen to contribute to building the nation.
Dr Bwalya urged Zambians to serve the country with honour and ensure that their contributions laid a strong foundation for future generations.
He said the 62nd Independence Anniversary provided an opportunity for citizens to reflect on the country’s journey, achievements and aspirations for the future.
The flag-hoisting ceremony forms part of activities to commemorate Zambia’s 62 years of independence.
This year’s independence is held under the theme, “Zambia @62: Our Journey, Our Growth, Our Future.”
