Tether’s USDT shed nearly $1 billion in market capitalization over five days in mid-October 2026, a contraction that is putting pressure on Bitcoin’s recovery at a delicate moment.
The numbers behind the contraction
On-chain analytics firm CryptoQuant tracked the $1 billion decline as Bitcoin was attempting to rebuild upward momentum. The broader picture, drawn from data compiled by Crystal Intelligence, is harder to ignore.
USDT balances held across 19 major exchanges and lending platforms fell by $4.6 billion between early July and October 1, 2026. Over that same period, those platforms absorbed approximately $1.9 billion in competing stablecoins, primarily USDC and RLUSD, suggesting traders did not exit the market entirely but did rotate away from Tether specifically.
Bybit illustrated that rotation most sharply. The exchange shed $1.66 billion in USDT while simultaneously adding $315 million in RLUSD, making it the single platform with the largest net USDT outflow in the dataset.
Overall USDT supply declined about 0.4%, or approximately $647 million, through September 2026, leaving the total near $184 billion. By October 20, that figure had slipped further to around $183 billion.
Why stablecoin supply and Bitcoin price are connected
The 2024 and 2025 Bitcoin rallies coincided with repeated multi-billion-dollar expansions in USDT’s market cap. Each wave of new issuance effectively refueled demand at a systemic level, giving traders and institutions the dry powder to push prices higher.
The $1.9 billion that flowed into USDC and RLUSD during the same period that USDT lost $4.6 billion at exchanges is a gap, not a replacement. Competing stablecoins are growing, but they are not yet moving in volumes large enough to make the overall liquidity picture neutral.
What traders and investors should watch
First, watch net USDT issuance. Tether mints and redeems USDT based on client demand. A return to net minting, especially in large tranches, would indicate that institutional and retail demand for stablecoin liquidity is recovering.
Second, monitor the USDC and RLUSD inflows at major exchanges. If competing stablecoins continue gaining ground, the question becomes whether their combined growth can offset USDT’s retreat and keep overall liquidity conditions stable for Bitcoin trading pairs.
Third, keep an eye on Bybit’s balance sheet in particular. As the platform with the largest single USDT outflow in this dataset, its trajectory will serve as a leading indicator for whether exchange-level stablecoin rotation is accelerating or stabilizing.
