The United Kingdom has announced an additional £2.35 million in funding to help South Sudan mitigate the risks associated with El Niño and strengthen communities’ resilience to climate change.
UK Ambassador to South Sudan Rebecca Fabrizi announced the funding in a press statement following the presentation of her Letters of Credence to President Salva Kiir Mayardit.
Fabrizi said the funding would support climate-resilient livelihoods and promote the sustainable management of South Sudan’s natural resources.
She noted that nearly 100,000 people in South Sudan need to adapt to climate change, adding that the UK aims to help communities better prepare for and manage climate-related risks.
The ambassador also announced an additional £10.7 million in support for South Sudan’s Health Sector Transformation Project, which seeks to improve access to healthcare services.
On education, Fabrizi said UK assistance had helped more than 1.5 million children access or complete their education, with girls accounting for most of the beneficiaries.
She added that the UK’s health partnership with South Sudan had enabled more than two million malaria patients to be tested and treated.
Fabrizi said South Sudan’s natural resources could play a significant role in the country’s future economic prosperity if managed effectively and sustainably.
The ambassador reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting South Sudan’s transition towards stability, peace and prosperity, noting that the coming weeks and months would be critical to the country’s future.
