Barcelona youngster Xavi Espart has promised an all-out effort against Real Madrid in Sunday’s El Clasico, describing the contest as a ‘war’ after scoring his first Champions League goal against Paris Saint-Germain.
Speaking to TNT Sports following Barcelona’s 4-2 defeat in Paris, the versatile full-back reflected on his breakthrough at senior level, the comparisons with Philipp Lahm and the opportunity to help his team gain ground on their biggest rivals.
The teenager has enjoyed a memorable period with the first team, but his attention has already shifted towards a fixture that could carry major consequences in the La Liga title race.
Espart embraces Lahm comparison but wants his own path
Hansi Flick has drawn comparisons between Espart and former Germany captain Philipp Lahm, a reference to the youngster’s ability to operate in several defensive positions and move into midfield areas.
Espart welcomed the recognition while making clear that he intends to establish his own identity rather than follow another player’s career.
“It’s an honour to be compared with Philipp Lahm, but I try to carve my own career path.
“I can also play left back, right back, and in midfield. I’m a full back who tends to cut inside.

“He’s a legendary player; it makes me happy that Flick compares me to him.”
The Barcelona defender expanded on his positional flexibility, explaining that his role can change depending on the tactical demands of a match.
“Depending on the game, I can play on the left, on the right or further inside. I’m a full-back who tends to drift inside.
“Of course I like being compared to him, because he’s a legendary player, and I’m very pleased that (Flick) says that,” he added.
Espart reflects on first Champions League goal
Espart’s European breakthrough came at the Parc des Princes, where he found the net against PSG despite Barcelona ultimately losing 4-2.
The goal marked another milestone in his rapid introduction to senior football, adding a Champions League strike to his two goals for Barcelona’s first team.

“It all happened so quickly. I played a one-two and, when I saw I had the chance, I didn’t think twice. In this stadium, against PSG in the Champions League, it’s every boy’s dream match.
“My first Champions League goal, two goals for the first team. I’m so happy – it’s mad,” he explained.
Espart sends fierce message before Barcelona face Real Madrid
Espart did not downplay the intensity expected when Barcelona meet Madrid on Sunday.
With the chance to take points away from their rivals, he stressed that the squad must approach the game with maximum commitment.
“It’ll be a war. We’ll go all out; we have to give 100% and we’ve got the chance to take more points off them.
“We’ll fight to the bitter end,” he concluded.
