Colombo, Oct. 15 (Daily Mirror) - A zebra at the Dehiwala Zoological Garden has recovered following a challenging emergency surgery to remove an obstruction in its digestive tract, the Department of National Zoological Gardens said.
The surgery was performed on October 9 after the animal fell ill on September 29. Sample analysis and scans revealed an obstruction in its digestive tract, prompting the veterinary team to undertake emergency surgery.
The procedure was carried out by veterinary officers and staff of the Department of National Zoological Gardens under the guidance of Dr. Dhammika Perera, Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Peradeniya.
Dr. Perera provided expert guidance on the diagnosis and surgical intervention, drawing on his specialised knowledge and experience in treating equine species.
The challenging operation lasted several hours and continued into the early hours of the following day. The veterinary team successfully removed a mass of undigested food that had caused the obstruction.
Following the surgery, the zebra remained under close veterinary supervision for several days. The department said the animal was now in good health and had returned to its normal feeding habits.
The department expressed its gratitude to Dr. Perera for his expert guidance and acknowledged the dedication of the zoo's veterinary officers, animal hospital staff and Animal Division personnel who supported the treatment and recovery process.
It also commended the Director General, Director (Operations), Deputy Director of the Dehiwala Zoo and other staff members for their guidance and support during the operation.
The department said the successful procedure highlighted the commitment of its staff to animal welfare and conservation.
