JUBA – The Interim Chairman of the Revive South Sudan Party (RSSP), Meen Mabor Meen (Menimen), warned that recent travel restrictions on political figures are actively sabotaging ongoing election preparations across the nation.
In a statement posted on his official page on Sunday, October 25, Menimen condemned requirements forcing political leaders to seek official clearance prior to traveling for electoral activities, stating that such measures severely restrict engagement with constituents and undermine democratic mobilization.
“How can political figures fulfill their duties if basic movement is constrained?” asked Menimen. “I urge His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit to reconsider this decision and align government policy with Article 27 of the Transitional Constitution of the Republic of South Sudan.”
Article 27 explicitly guarantees that: “Every citizen has the right to travel freely and choose their place of residence within the country, unless restricted by law for reasons of public health and safety.”
Menimen concluded that to ensure the credibility of the upcoming elections, freedom of movement for all political actors must be fully restored.
Menimen’s demands follow growing outrage across South Sudan’s political spectrum regarding internal travel clearances.
Speaking at a press conference in Juba, Kornelio Kon Ngu—leader of the National Alliance of Political Parties and a presidential candidate for the December elections—warned that requiring former government officials to secure written permission effectively places them under house arrest.
“To us, this means we are under arrest, because a person who must seek permission to travel is not free,” Kon declared. Referring to his planned travel to Wau, the former Deputy Speaker of Parliament insisted he would not request government permission as a private citizen. Kon called on President Kiir to lift the restrictions so political leaders and citizens alike can freely travel, educate voters, and prepare for the upcoming general election.
