Crypto traders who borrowed to bet on higher prices had a rough day. Over the past 24 hours, $383 million in long positions were liquidated across the crypto market.
What actually got wiped out
A long position is a bet that an asset’s price will rise. In derivatives markets, traders often amplify those bets with borrowed money, putting up a slice of collateral to control a much larger position.
Once losses eat through a trader’s collateral, the exchange automatically closes the trade. That forced exit is a liquidation. The trader’s margin is gone, and the platform sells the position into the market to protect itself.
The $383 million figure covers long positions only. Every dollar of it belonged to traders who expected prices to climb and used leverage to make that expectation more profitable.
Liquidations also tend to feed on themselves. Forced selling pushes prices lower, which can trip the next tier of leveraged longs, which triggers more forced selling.
A familiar pattern in 2026
Earlier in 2026, a separate 24-hour stretch also produced $383 million in liquidations, though that tally covered both sides of the trade. In that January episode, longs accounted for $259 million while shorts made up $124 million.
One snapshot from that period showed Bitcoin futures longs liquidated at $55.3 million and Ethereum longs at $44 million. More than 130,000 traders were caught in the flush during one reported window in early 2026.
The single largest liquidation during that stretch landed on Hyperliquid. One position on the PUMP-USD pair was closed out for $11.15 million.
By March, the pressure flipped, and $256 million in short positions were liquidated as price action turned against bearish traders.
Later in the year, daily liquidation totals swung between $199 million and $455 million. During price declines, longs frequently made up 87% to 92% of the total.
What this means for traders and the market
When liquidations skew this heavily toward longs, it signals that the market was crowded on one side. Too many traders were leaning the same direction with borrowed money, and a move against them cleared out a large chunk of that bet.
The 2026 data tells a consistent story: when prices weaken, leveraged longs absorb the overwhelming majority of the damage, constituting up to 92% of total liquidations during price downturns.
Traders will be watching whether liquidation volumes stay elevated over the coming sessions, and whether the balance between long and short liquidations starts to shift. A sustained run of long-dominated liquidations would suggest sellers still have control. A sudden spike in short liquidations would hint that the crowd has swung too far the other way.
