Passengers travelling from Sydney Airport on Friday may face possible delays at security screening. Hundreds of Certis employees, the company that handles security screening at the airport, have announced a strike on Friday, October 16, amid an ongoing dispute over pay and employment conditions.
According to the Transport Workers’ Union (TWU), the strike will run from 6 am to 10 am and from 5 pm to 9 pm. It is said to apply to both the domestic and international terminals.
The workers are demanding more full-time job opportunities, fairer work schedules and an end to cuts to part-time employees’ working hours.
According to the union, employees are affected by unpredictable rosters and job insecurity.
The union has demanded that, while Sydney Airport is making large profits, the staff who ensure passenger safety be given fair pay and secure employment.
TWU National Secretary Michael Kaine has alleged that pressure from the airport on contracted companies to cut costs is hurting workers’ pay and conditions. This is the union’s claim, and the views of the parties concerned are also important.
Meanwhile, a Sydney Airport spokesperson said they are aware of Friday’s industrial action and are working with the parties concerned to minimise the possible impact on passengers. The airport has advised passengers to allow extra time and to follow notices from their airlines.
Since talks between the parties are continuing, the strike situation may change. Passengers travelling from Sydney Airport on Friday are therefore advised to check flight information through their airline’s app or official notices and, if needed, plan to arrive at the airport somewhat earlier.
