Pakistan’s pink salt is among its most distinctive mineral resources, yet much of its economic potential remains untapped. Extracted largely as a raw mineral and sold at relatively low prices, it is often processed, packaged and branded abroad, allowing a substantial share of the value to accrue outside Pakistan. Punjab’s new initiative seeks to change this pattern by promoting local processing, enterprise and internationally competitive Pakistani products.
Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has launched the province’s first Pink Salt Value Addition Financing Scheme, offering interest-free loans of up to Rs50 million to businesses engaged in processing and developing pink salt products. At the launch, she distributed cheques among 10 entrepreneurs and directed to extend the scheme to more prospective businesses.
The Punjab government has allocated Rs5 billion for interest-free financing under the scheme and will bear Rs1.456 billion in interest costs. The initiative is designed to lower the financial barrier for entrepreneurs and encourage investment in processing, packaging and product development.
At the centre of the program is a 110-acre Pink Salt Processing Unit in Quaidabad, established as a specialised industrial cluster. The Pink Salt Mineral Processing Zone is planned to accommodate 200 units and is expected to create more than 10,000 employment opportunities, providing a new industrial base around one of the province’s important mineral resources.
The significance of the initiative goes beyond salt mining. A stronger processing industry can generate demand for machinery, packaging, transport, marketing and retail services, creating an interconnected local business ecosystem. It can also provide young entrepreneurs and startups with opportunities to develop consumer products rather than remaining confined to the trading of raw minerals.
The Punjab government has established a model retail outlet to demonstrate the processing, packaging and marketing of pink salt products. Such facilities can help businesses understand how a raw resource can be transformed into market-ready goods capable of competing on international shelves.
The central idea behind the initiative is straightforward: Pakistan should increasingly export products, not merely raw materials. Pink salt is a national mineral asset and a larger share of the wealth generated from it can remain within the country if processing is undertaken locally. The provincial government’s stated intention to support young businesses and facilitate access to international markets is, therefore, an important component of its export-oriented approach.
It’s estimated that processing and product development could increase annual exports by as much as $300 million. This is a potential target, not a guaranteed outcome. Its achievement will depend on investment, quality, international demand, competitive pricing and the ability of Pakistani businesses to establish reliable overseas distribution.
The policy also raises a broader question for Punjab: how can the province move from being a supplier of raw materials to a producer of internationally competitive goods? Minerals provide an important starting point, but the longer-term objective should be to develop industries around those resources, retain more economic value locally and create skilled employment.
Natural resources should not end their economic journey at the mine. The greater opportunity lies in transforming them into competitive products and sustainable export industries that create jobs and retain more value in Pakistan.
