Russia needs a “doomsday” data center, said Valery Yermakov, deputy chairman of Rostelecom’s management board. He made the proposal on the day Ukrainian drones first attacked a Sber data center.
Everyone understands that we absolutely need a so-called doomsday facility today. It’s a place to store backups so that if something happens, you can always restore your services. Some time ago, this really would have been unimaginable, but now there’s a very real need for it. We need a so-called doomsday data center because backups now allow any service provider to recover very quickly.
Ukrainian drones attacked Sber’s infrastructure for the first time overnight into October 14, hitting a data center in Balakovo, in Russia’s Saratov region. Sber confirmed the attack but said all its services were operating normally. Users, however, began reporting disruptions to Sber and other services.
