A school letter asking a parent to change their child's packed lunch because it made other pupils jealous sparked widespread debate online. Shared on the Kempton Park Community Facebook group on 22 October 2026, the official notice dated 14 October 2026 was posted by user Maake Boitumelo and revealed that administrators approached the parent regarding the warm meals sent to school. While acknowledging that hot food provided good nutrition, the school claimed that other students expressed feelings of jealousy and disappointment because their own lunches looked different.

School claims hot meals create classroom distractions

In the letter, the school explained that the situation started causing distractions during lunch breaks as learners began comparing meals, asking to share, or becoming upset over the differences. In an effort to maintain what it described as an inclusive environment, the school requested that the parent consider switching to cold options like sandwiches and fruit to align with what other students bring.

Mzansi parents react to school's request

The post quickly sparked heated discussion on social media, with many accusing the school of being unreasonable and failing to set boundaries for learners.

@SereneWolf5535 commented:

"We give our kids things they like to eat and what we can afford. Really, this is nonsense."

@Angela Sandells wrote:

"Keep packing the lunch you pack now. What other kids have is not your problem. I cook extra in the evenings, so I have lunch for myself. I don't eat bread often."

@Desirè Green advised:

"Tell them that your child has a special diet and you will not change it. Thank you, bey."

@Joni de Lange added:

"This request is wrong on so many levels. Continue to pack the school lunches you've been packing for your child. You are the parent 💖."
