Lakers insider says LA should cut $3.9M injury-prone 3x NBA champion, not Dalton Knecht originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
At this point in the NBA preseason, the Los Angeles Lakers are making it increasingly clear who is likely to be let go. Dalton Knecht appears to be the most likely candidate, as he has recently lost his role with the team.
The former first-round pick is in a difficult position if he gets cut, as he could have a hard time finding another team.
“He's in a tough spot because most rosters are full, or actually, over-full," Lakers insider Jovan Buha said. "I just don't see a realistic landing spot where someone is gonna claim him off waivers or trade for him solo."
However, there might be a little hope after all. With the preseason coming to an end on Friday, Lakers insider Anthony F. Irwin believes LA should cut veteran center Kevon Looney instead of Dalton Knecht or Jaden Hardy.
“Here's my hottest take of the night heading into roster decisions… I think it makes a lot more sense to cut Looney than either of Knecht or Hardy because of their contracts. None of those guys are playable, but at least Knecht/Hardy's contracts can be stacked,” Irwin posted.
This would be a shocking turn of events, to say the least, as it would mean the three-time NBA champion would be let go. It is unlikely to happen, especially considering that it would leave an even bigger hole at the center position.
“They've agreed to a one-year deal with veteran center Kevon Looney, who was Kuminga's teammate while with the Golden State Warriors. The deal is worth $3.9 million, Life Sports Agency CEO Todd Ramasar told ESPN's Shams Charania. Looney projects to slot in at backup center," ESPN's Anthony Slater wrote.
This is going to be an interesting situation for the Lakers as they decide how to handle their final roster spots. Irwin has a point about the financial implications, as the team would owe more money by letting Knecht go.
The former first-round pick doesn't appear to have a role in LA, but Looney might not have a secure role either if the Lakers can find another backup center. Looney has battled injuries throughout his career, and they have taken a toll on his mobility, leading some to question his overall effectiveness.
