By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) and personnel from the Protected Areas Conservation Trust and Belize Nature Conservation Fund (PACT/BNCF) have visited Cebada Cave in the Chiquibul National Park.
Cebada Cave is the third section of the Chiquibul Cave System, recognized as the largest known cave system in Central America.
The visit was part of a project implemented by FCD with funding from the Belize Nature Conservation Fund.
It highlighted the work of FCD’s Karst rangers, who document, monitor and protect the park’s fragile underground environments with guidance from the Institute of Archaeology at NICH.
FCD says the Chiquibul is more than a protected forest. Its caves and archaeological sites preserve traces of the ancient Maya, including their ceremonial practices, traditions and beliefs.
