A man who was allegedly on the run for six months after a murder appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
Chad Lee Appels is facing a murder charge, and the state is opposing bail.
The court heard that Appels was arrested last week after allegedly evading police since May.
The state said Appels allegedly committed the murder with an accomplice and was in possession of an unlicensed firearm.
The State told the court that Appels’s firearm misfired during the alleged incident, after which he allegedly called on his accomplice to “finish the job”.
“In May, the accused entered the deceased’s property while he was standing in the yard and began firing shots at him,” the State said.
“The deceased then ran inside the house, into a room.
“The accused’s firearm misfired, and he then asked his accomplice to shoot the deceased.”
The State added that, with the help of witnesses, police were able to trace Appels, who was subsequently arrested.
“He was known to the witnesses,” the State said.
The State is opposing bail, describing the matter as a Schedule 6 offence with charges related to the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.
“It is a gang-related offence,” the State said.
The state also indicated that Appels had previously faced a charge of possession of drugs.
Appels’s defence lawyer indicated that his client would apply for bail. The matter was postponed to October 26.
