US Vice President JD Vance said on Thursday that anyone selling access to the White House should face consequences, after questions about allegations against former US ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle.
Vance made the comments to CBS News anchor Tony Dokoupil during a town hall in Michigan. The exchange followed allegations that Guilfoyle asked a man seeking help from the Trump administration to wire her $100,000. She has denied wrongdoing.
“First of all, if somebody’s selling access to the White House, that’s disgusting and despicable and they should suffer consequences,” Vance said.
JD Vance on the Guilfoyle allegations
Dokoupil asked about a series of recent reports involving potential ethical misconduct, including Guilfoyle’s departure from her diplomatic post in Athens. In response, JD Vance said he wanted to judge such claims on the evidence.
“I want to make those judgments based on the facts and not based on a random news media report that I read,” he said.
Dokoupil also raised President Donald Trump’s cryptocurrency earnings. Trump has denied any conflicts of interest.
The remarks go further than Vance’s first response to the case. Earlier in October, he told reporters he did not “love” the idea of an official selling access, but would not say whether the allegations fitted that description. Greek City Times reported that exchange in Vance’s earlier comments on the Guilfoyle texts.
Subpoenas and the midterm elections
The interview, recorded for “CBS Evening News”, is scheduled to air on Saturday 17 October, less than three weeks before the US midterm elections.
Congressional Democrats have vowed to investigate the administration if they win control of the House or the Senate. A majority would give them control of congressional committees and the power to subpoena administration officials.
Asked whether the administration would comply with any subpoenas, JD Vance answered directly: “Of course I will. Look, I mean, we follow the law.”
