Lucy Hale teamed up with Proem designers Ashley Drost and Marie Trohman to bring colour, character and depth to her home.
A house can hold the story of a life in ways that photographs rarely capture. For actor Lucy Hale, her Los Angeles home has witnessed heartbreak, personal change and the quiet work of finding herself again.
What began as a sunlit Spanish-style retreat with understated, farmhouse-inspired interiors has since become a deeply personal expression of her evolving identity. Following her decision to get sober in 2022, Hale embarked on a three-year redesign that brought bold colours, vintage treasures, playful art and a dedicated meditation room into the 1940s property, turning it into a sanctuary that feels distinctly her own.
A home with a history
Hale purchased the Spanish-style residence in 2019 for $2.95 million, according to The Los Angeles Times. Tucked behind a gated, winding driveway in Studio City, the two-storey home occupies approximately an acre of land, with canyon views and a saltwater swimming pool offering a sense of seclusion from the city beyond. The 2,750-square-foot property features four bedrooms and 3.25 bathrooms, alongside walnut flooring, high ceilings and decorative tilework.
French doors open from the chef’s kitchen and dining room onto a tiled patio with a brick fireplace, while the primary suite combines a clawfoot bathtub, artistic tiles and a cedar-lined walk-in closet. When Hale first moved in, she favoured a neutral, farmhouse-inspired aesthetic. The interiors were intended to provide a peaceful counterpoint to the demands of a career that had placed her in the spotlight from a young age.
But, as her life changed, the house began to feel ready for a transformation of its own.
Designing for a new chapter
As Architectural Digest reports, Hale’s decision to rethink her surroundings coincided with a period of significant personal growth. After getting sober in 2022, she began paying closer attention to her mental wellbeing and reconsidering what she wanted her home to represent. The actor eventually found her design collaborators in Ashley Drost and Marie Trohman of Los Angeles-based studio Proem.
Drawn to their expressive, eclectic interiors, Hale wanted a home with greater depth, colour and personality. The designers developed an aesthetic they describe as moody femme, bringing together romantic flourishes, unexpected objects and a slightly irreverent sensibility. The renovation took three years to complete, allowing the residence to evolve into a collection of intimate spaces rather than a single, uniform design statement.Colour, character and collected treasuresThe new interiors move confidently beyond the neutral palette of the original renovation. Plum-coloured kitchen cabinets, pink accents, aubergine tones and richly textured furnishings introduce warmth and drama, while patterned fabrics and decorative wall coverings give each room its own identity. The primary bedroom takes cues from the intimacy of a Parisian jewel-box apartment, with textured linen wall coverings lending softness to the space.
In the foyer, a life-size sheep sculpture creates an unexpected first impression, while playful artwork brings a sense of humour to the breakfast nook.Family history finds its way into the design, too. A vintage Elvis Presley lamp in the media room celebrates Hale’s Memphis roots and her grandmother’s affection for the musician. Custom stained-glass windows by Los Angeles artist Ben Tuna, known professionally as the Glass Cowboy, draw inspiration from her grandparents’ front door in Tennessee. These details make the interiors feel collected over time, with personal associations taking precedence over perfectly coordinated rooms.
Spaces for reflection and remembrance
Beyond its colourful finishes, the home’s most significant changes are deeply personal. Hale transformed a guest bedroom overlooking the canyon into a mint-green office where she works through scripts. A dedicated meditation room holds an altar to departed loved ones, alongside feathers and vintage Happy Meal toys.Photographs of family members line the hallway, while a white chair in the living room serves as a quiet reminder of her late father. These intimate touches give the home an emotional resonance that no design trend could replicate. The property remains a retreat from the outside world, but it is no longer simply a place to escape. Through three years of considered changes, Hale has created an environment that reflects her memories, her recovery and her growing sense of self. More than a renovation, the home is a portrait of a woman learning to make space for who she is today and who she hopes to become.Images Courtesy: Instagram/lucehaly
