The BJP on Thursday accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and his supporters of trying to create what it called “Bangladesh-like anarchy” in India to bring about a change in government at the Centre, news agency Press Trust of India reported.
BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari cited alleged remarks by All India Students' Association leader Neha Bora about being inspired by the youth-led movement in Bangladesh. There was no immediate response from the Congress or Bora to the allegations.
Speaking at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, Bhandari described Bora's alleged remarks as “proof of Gandhi's conspiracy”.
“Neha Bora said in an interview that she is inspired by the Bangladesh ‘andolan’ (movement) and that what happened in Bangladesh should happen in India as well. These are Neha Bora's words but Rahul Gandhi's view,” Bhandari alleged, according to PTI.
He claimed that they wanted a Bangladesh-like movement led by Generation Z in India and that their goal was “regime change”.
Bhandari further alleged that Bora's remarks and her presence at Gandhi's recent protest march showed that the Congress leader and his “entire ecosystem” were trying to create unrest and bring the party back to power at the Centre.
“This is not political resistance; this is an anarchic march and an anarchic revolt. Their goal is regime change,” he said.
“There is a series of patterns which shows that the objective of Rahul Gandhi is not democratic resistance, but appropriation and legitimisation of anarchy. It is the Congress' fight against the Indian state and Indian democracy,” Bhandari added.
He also alleged that Gandhi wanted to bring his “family” back to power through such a “conspiracy” because the Congress was unable to do so through democratic means under his leadership.
BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia also criticised Gandhi over his October 12 march to the Supreme Court and asked whether it was intended to “intimidate” the judiciary.
“Protest can be held only at the designated site, that too after obtaining prior permission from the authority concerned. Protests have to be peaceful. This is the law of the country. The Supreme Court precincts cannot be used as a political arena,” Bhatia said at a press conference at the BJP headquarters.
“The Supreme Court has issued a notice to him seeking a reply,” he added.
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said on Thursday that nobody could browbeat the judiciary while hearing a plea concerning the October 12 march to the Supreme Court by Gandhi and several other opposition leaders.
A Bench comprising the Chief Justice and Justice Joymalya Bagchi issued notices to Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, the Congress, the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee and others on a plea against the march, PTI reported.
Appearing for the petitioners, Bhatia, who is also a senior advocate, told the Bench that what happened on October 12 on the Supreme Court premises was completely unacceptable.
At the press conference, Bhatia also criticised Bora and CJP leaders, alleging that they had no faith in the judiciary, the Constitution or democracy. “They only believe in mobocracy,” he said.
“It has become clear that Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav, Dipke, Neha Bora, Prakash Raj and Prashant Bhushan — all of them are hand in glove. They have but one objective, that is to completely dismantle the core spirit of the Constitution,” Bhatia added.
The BJP's allegations centred on Bora's purported remarks and the October 12 march to the Supreme Court, while the court issued notices to Gandhi and several other opposition leaders over the protest.
