The golf world is still reeling from the fallout of a controversial marketing campaign that stripped a major brand partnership and cancelled a television show in record time.
Craig Kessler, the LPGA commissioner, confronted the disorder directly, labeling the notorious Good Good Golf–Callaway driver advertisement a “brutal” and “heartbreaking” situation. While the incident caused massive reputational damage for the content creators, Kessler argued that the industry must still allow space for people to admit errors and learn from them.
On Tuesday at the Front Office Sports Tuned In summit, Kessler spoke candidly about the issue. He did not mince words regarding how the ad came to be, noting that “the fact that someone thought that was a good idea, and it came to life, just shows you that while society has made enormous progress, we have a very, very long way to go.”
The ad triggered a cascade of consequences for Good Good, including the loss of its partnership with Callaway, the dropping of a sponsorship for a new PGA Tour event, and the removal of its merchandise from many stores. The Golf Channel also pulled the plug on its reality TV competition series. Despite these severe outcomes, the LPGA never had any official partnership with Good Good.
Although Kessler stopped short of defending Good Good’s handling of the crisis, he emphasized a broader philosophy on accountability. In February, he likened this to his own professional struggles, having publicly apologized for canceling the final round of the LPGA’s season-opening tournament due to freezing temperatures in Florida.
The commissioner admitted his biggest regret was overruling his own team members on that weather call, stating, according to Yahoo Sports, “They were right, and I was wrong.” He questioned the logic of a zero-tolerance culture, asking, “Should I have lost my job for making a mistake? Like, that’s crazy.”
Kessler warned that if society refuses to let people learn from errors, it becomes impossible to “raise a society of risk takers.” Good Good has been attempting to return to business as usual nearly two months after the scandal broke, but the damage to its brand remains significant as the golf community watches to see if forgiveness is truly possible in the modern game.
The Business of Forgiveness
The incident highlights a delicate balance between public accountability and the need for growth within professional sports. Kessler’s comments suggest that while the financial and reputational penalties for such a “brutal” mistake are severe and perhaps necessary, the door should not be permanently shut.
The golf industry, much like any other, relies on innovation and risk-taking to evolve. If every misstep results in career-ending vilification, the talent pool might become too risk-averse to push boundaries. Kessler’s own experience with the weather cancellation serves as a prime example of how even seasoned leaders can make wrong calls, yet still remain in their positions to lead effectively.
What makes this situation particularly complex is the speed at which modern media can destroy a brand. The Good Good Golf ad went from a marketing stunt to a cancelled TV show and lost sponsorship in a matter of weeks. This rapid escalation forces a conversation about whether the punishment fits the crime.
Kessler’s stance implies that while the immediate reaction from sponsors and networks is understandable, the long-term health of the sport depends on allowing people to demonstrate change. The fact that Good Good is still trying to operate suggests they are betting on this very principle: that they can rebuild trust over time.
Lessons for the Industry
For fans and executives alike, the key takeaway is the distinction between the mistake and the person. Kessler’s narrative shifts the focus from the “brutal” nature of the ad to the human element behind it. He argues that a society without forgiveness cannot foster the risk-takers needed to drive the game forward.
This perspective is crucial for a sport that often struggles with rigid traditions and slow adaptation. The commissioner’s willingness to share his own vulnerabilities, including the personal impact on his family, adds weight to his argument. It transforms a corporate crisis into a human lesson about resilience and redemption.
As the industry moves forward, the question remains whether other governing bodies will adopt a similar approach. The PGA Tour and DP World Tour often face their own controversies, and the precedent set by Kessler could influence how they handle future scandals. If the goal is to create a sustainable ecosystem, then allowing room for correction seems essential.
However, the immediate reality for Good Good is stark. They have lost major revenue streams and must work hard to prove that their “massive mistake” was indeed a one-time event rather than a pattern of behavior.
