BERLIN: German automaker Volkswagen plans to cut an additional 12,000 jobs by 2030 as part of an intensified cost-cutting programme, according to Bild newspaper, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
According to the publication, the cuts would be in addition to a previously approved workforce-reduction programme, which already includes plans to eliminate more than 35,000 positions.
Volkswagen's management intends to carry out the job cuts in a “socially responsible” manner by offering employees the option of entering state-supported retraining programmes.
However, the trade union IG Metall has threatened strike action at the automaker from 2027.
Formal collective bargaining negotiations are scheduled for Nov 24, while the current “peace obligation” period, during which industrial action is prohibited, expires on Dec 31.
