The city traffic police on Saturday decided to ensure medical and psychological fitness of drivers in Lahore to prevent road accidents and help control smog.
The decision was taken at an important meeting on road safety and smog, chaired by Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore, Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi, with representatives of bus owners, Mazda, mini-goods, truck transport and tractor-trolley associations in attendance. According to the CTO, mobile medical camps will be established to conduct medical and psychological examinations of drivers. The examinations will cover eyesight, colour blindness, overall medical fitness and psychological health to ensure safe driving on roads.
During the meeting, transporters were directed to install cameras in their vehicles to monitor speeding and promote compliance with traffic regulations. They were also instructed to ensure that rear lights and reflectors of vehicles remained functional at night to reduce the risk of road accidents. The meeting further directed owners and operators of tractor-trolleys carrying sand and soil to ensure that their loads were properly covered with tarpaulins. The CTO warned that cases would be registered against those violating the directives.
