North Korea said it test-fired two types of submarine-launched strategic cruise missiles in the East Sea on the 14th.
The Korean Central News Agency reported on the 15th that "the Missile Administration test-fired two types of submarine-launched strategic cruise missiles in the East Sea of Korea on the 14th." North Korean leader Kim Jong-un appears not to have attended the launch. The agency said Kim Jong-sik, first vice department director of the Workers' Party Central Committee, Jang Chang-ha, head of the Missile Administration, and technicians of the Korean People's Army Navy's underwater weapons systems observed the test.
The agency said the test "contributed to inspecting the routine mobilization posture of underwater combat systems and honing the navy's ability to carry out strategic missions," adding that it "helped demonstrate the high reliability, dependability and capability of the country's war deterrence assets."
South Korean military authorities did not disclose the missile launch. The test was not reported by the Rodong Sinmun, the Workers' Party newspaper read by North Korean residents, and appeared only in the Korean Central News Agency, an outlet aimed at external audiences.
