The Lagos Waste Management Authority has renewed its call for residents to actively report illegal waste dumping, stressing that collective responsibility is essential for a cleaner and healthier city.
In a public advisory released on Friday on its X handle, LAWMA warned that illegal dumping is more than an eyesore. The practice creates serious environmental and public health risks for communities across the state, including blocked drainage systems, increased flooding during rains, and the spread of diseases.
“A cleaner Lagos starts with all of us,” the authority stated. “If you witness waste being dumped illegally, take action by reporting the incident through LAWMA’s official channels. Remember to provide the location and relevant details.”
Residents can report cases via the toll-free lines 08000052962 (also reachable as 080000LAWMA) and 07080601020. LAWMA advised callers to share precise location information, time of the incident, and any supporting details such as vehicle descriptions or photographs to enable swift response.
The appeal comes against a backdrop of ongoing enforcement efforts. According to LAWMA’s 2025 Waste Surveillance Statistics, the agency recorded 1,023 cases of illegal dumping and waste management non-compliance last year. Of these, 447 were referred for legal action, involving both men and women. Peak dumping activity was noted between midnight and early morning, with residential refuse, construction debris, and hazardous waste among the most common materials discarded unlawfully.
Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, has repeatedly urged Lagosians to use registered Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators for proper waste collection and to avoid dumping in drains, road medians, or open spaces.
Officials emphasised that public reports remain one of the most effective tools for identifying blackspots and holding offenders accountable. “Let’s take responsibility for our environment, one report at a time,” the agency said.
Residents with complaints or service-related enquiries can also reach LAWMA by email at [email protected] or through its official social media handles.
As Lagos continues its push toward improved sanitation and circular economy solutions, authorities say everyday vigilance by citizens will play a decisive role in keeping the city clean.
