KORYDALLOS, October 2026 — A false Korydallos school ceiling section came loose and fell on a pupil during a lesson at the 8th Gymnasium, the local Parents’ Union said, prompting demands for full technical checks.
The union said the Korydallos school ceiling incident cannot be treated as an isolated accident. It points to wider risks from wear in school buildings and wants the competent authorities to act at once.
No serious injury was reported. Even so, the union said the absence of serious harm does not remove the danger pupils and teachers may face from damaged classrooms.
It called for an immediate, complete technical inspection of the 8th Gymnasium, with written results and a clear list of works required. Dangerous faults should be fixed with proper technical repairs, not makeshift fixes, the union said.
Korydallos school ceiling checks
The Parents’ Union also urged the municipal authority and other competent bodies to move quickly. Pupil safety cannot be left to chance, it said, and prevention must catch infrastructure gaps before another accident linked to a Korydallos school ceiling failure.
Greek City Times also covered another Athens school scare in the Kypseli schoolyard attack on evening-school students — a different kind of risk, but one that also put school safety in the spotlight.
Teachers raise the alarm
ELME Piraeus, the secondary teachers’ union for the area, warned that school-building conditions have reached dangerous levels. It wants immediate checks across all school units and a real rise in state funding for maintenance.
Teachers cannot carry responsibility for the safety of buildings that belongs to state and municipal authorities, the union said.
“We will not gamble with the lives of our pupils and colleagues,” ELME Piraeus said, calling for prevention before a more serious accident.
School infrastructure sits under the Ministry of Education. Official decisions and funding notices also appear on the government portal Diavgeia.
