The erosion of values and sanctity in the fields of politics, education, health, and religion is a cause for concern. In such times, the media must not forget its ethical responsibility. Upholding media values is the duty of journalists, M. Mohan Alva, chairman, Alva’s Education Foundation, Moodbidri, said here on Wednesday.
He spoke after inaugurating Mangaluru Press Club’s renovated Akshara Sabhaangana hall at the Patrika Bhavan.
He noted that the media bears the significant responsibility of not only highlighting societal flaws but also correcting the functioning of elected representatives and officials. He stressed that societal reform is possible only through the observance of journalistic ethics.
Speaking on the occasion, former Minister J. Krishna Palemar said that media has made a significant contribution to the development of Mangaluru city. People-centric reporting — highlighting the poor condition of roads and various public issues — has accelerated development works in the city. Journalists must play an active role in the region’s development, he said.
Mr. Palemar said media must maintain constant vigilance and alert the public over matters concerning urban planning and public safety.
Press Club president P.B. Harish Rai presided over the event. B.N. Pushparaj, president, Dakshina Kannada Union of Working Journalists, was present.
