If you've ever wondered whether an AI feature on your phone is doing anything useful, Ben Khalesi has probably asked the same question. He has covered AI and Android for Android Police since 2023, with Pixel, Galaxy, Google's apps, and the rest of the Android ecosystem never far behind. Ben is a lifelong geek who trained as an AI engineer and earned a bachelor's in IT, so when the industry announces something new, he's the one who wants to know how everything works behind the scene and what can be trusted.
Google Assistant is officially dead. In September 2026, Google pulled it from Android phones and tablets. It's also gone from Wear OS watches and Android Auto.
Gemini took its place everywhere, whether you asked for it or not. Plenty of Android owners didn't ask for it. Forums and Reddit are filled with complaints about the new default AI.
It's not hard to see why they're mad. Hands-free commands that used to be instant now come back as mini-lectures from a chatbot trained to make conversation.
An assistant shouldn't be trying to make friends. The good news is you don't have to change your phone or put up with the small talk.
Now here's the honest truth. Assistant isn't coming back, no matter how many settings you change. Gemini is here to stay.
But with a little elbow grease in the settings and a few toggles, you can get Gemini to behave a lot like the good old Assistant.
Write a rulebook that makes Gemini cut the small talk
Talk Gemini out of its chatty habits
Gemini is a conversational language model at heart, and Google tuned it to be polite and explanatory. You can, however, set your own instructions for Gemini.
Open Gemini > Settings > Personal intelligence > Instructions for Gemini. Whatever you type in that box becomes a standing rule for every conversation after it.
Here's what I use:
Respond the way the classic Google Assistant did. Keep every answer short, direct, and immediate.
Put the answer in the first sentence. Never restate my question.
Keep most replies to one or two sentences. Only go longer if I ask for more detail or say "more."
When I give a command, like setting a timer, sending a message, or controlling a device, just do it and confirm in a few words, such as "Timer set for 10 minutes."
For quick facts, give only the key information, such as "It's sunny with a high of 75."
Skip greetings, compliments, and filler like "Great question" or "I'd be happy to help."
Don't end with follow-up questions or offers to help further.
Don't use headings, bullet points, bold text, or emoji unless I ask for them.
Leave out disclaimers and caveats unless they matter for safety or accuracy.
That cuts the pleasantries and the throat-clearing intros. If you have smart home devices, you can add a few more commands, like these:
For smart home operations, act immediately and confirm in five words or fewer, such as "Lights off" or "Thermostat set to 70."
Don't announce what you're about to do or explain how you did it.
If I control several devices at once, confirm them all in one short line, like "Lights and fan off."
For status checks, give only the current state, such as "Front door is locked."
If a device is offline or the command fails, say so in one short sentence.
If it's unclear which device I mean, ask a few words, like "Which light?"
Instructions for Gemini apply to your entire Google account. These rules affect every Gemini chat, including typed conversations in the app and on the web.
If you use Gemini for writing or research, scope the rules to quick commands and questions, or save your long-form preferences as a skill. The feature will replace Gems this November.
Connect Google Home, so Gemini knows where your lights are
Otherwise, 'dim the lights' might become a web search
Smart home control is the next headache. Sometimes Gemini hears "Dim the living room lights" and responds with a web search, as if you'd asked to go shopping for bulbs.
The fix is routing commands through Google Home. Turn on Google Home in Gemini's Connected Apps settings, which gives Gemini access to the same smart home devices your Google account controls in the Google Home app.
If Gemini still answers a smart home command with a web search, add "@Google Home" to your request.
That gives Gemini access to the same smart home devices your Google account controls in the Google Home app. Keep Activity must be on, or Gemini won't be able to connect.
After that's set up, Gemini can handle requests the old Assistant choked on, because it's much better at understanding conversational phrasing.
For example, saying "The sun is too bright in the living room" can close your smart blinds.
One more toggle makes this usable day to day. In the Gemini app, open Settings > Gemini on lock screen and turn on Use Gemini without unlocking. If you skip it, your phone will insist on a fingerprint or PIN before running your commands.
Device Assistance is the on-device sidekick
It covers the everyday stuff that Assistant used to handle
Your smart home gear runs through the cloud, but your alarm clock and flashlight live on the phone.
Google Home can't set a morning alarm or turn on your flashlight, so Gemini relies on a separate connected app for on-device tasks.
It used to be called Utilities, and Google renamed it Device Assistance in August.
Device Assistance lets Gemini reach outside its chatbot box and work with your Android phone's settings. Make sure it's turned on in Connected Apps, and Gemini can set timers and silence alarms again.
This is where Gemini pulls ahead of Assistant. The old Assistant could chain up to three simple commands, but only if you joined them with "and" and each one stood on its own. Gemini is much more forgiving about how you phrase things.
Scheduled Actions is the closest thing to Routines
Ten actions max, plus you'll need a paid plan
Routines aren't gone, but the phone side of them is. Smart home automations live in the Google Home app's Automations tab, and you can build them for free from time, device, and presence triggers.
Power users can write scripted automations on the Google Home website. If you pay for Google Home Premium, Help me create will build an automation from a plain-English description.
Power users lost phone tricks. For the briefing half of an old routine, Scheduled Actions is the next best thing we have now.
Setting one up is as easy as asking. Tell Gemini something like "Every weekday at 8 AM, summarize my unread emails and today's calendar," and you can manage it later from the Scheduled page in Gemini's menu.
Gemini runs the request on Google's servers and sends the result to your phone as a notification.
The catch is that you can only keep 10 active Scheduled Actions per account.
Price may also be an issue for free users. Google lists scheduled actions as a perk of its AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra plans, though it says the feature is gradually rolling out to all personal accounts.
Gemini is better but only behaves after you train it
The old Assistant worked out of the box because it was a tightly fenced-in tool with predefined limits and deterministic results.
Gemini can do far more, but it expects you to manage it.
Getting the classic experience back means digging through menus and permissions, plus getting good at prompting.
The plug-and-play assistant is gone. What replaced it is more powerful. It will shut up and do its job only after you've taught it to.
