The liquid restaking protocol halted redemptions while it works to correct exchange rates distorted by a compromised infrastructure key
Swell Network has suspended withdrawals for two of its flagship liquid restaking tokens, swETH and rswETH, after discovering unbacked increases in their exchange rates. The protocol linked the issue to a leaked key associated with Railway, a cloud deployment platform used in parts of its infrastructure.
Liquid restaking tokens like swETH and rswETH represent staked or restaked ether held on behalf of users. Each token's exchange rate reflects how much underlying ETH it should be redeemable for. When that rate rises without a corresponding increase in actual backing, it creates a mismatch between the token's reported value and the assets available to cover redemptions.
According to Cryptopolitan, the unbacked rate hikes followed the exposure of a key connected to Railway's systems. Unchained reported that Swell responded by freezing withdrawals for both tokens entirely, stating it intends to correct the exchange rates before allowing users to redeem again. Neither report detailed the exact mechanism by which the leaked key enabled rate manipulation.
The incident highlights a recurring risk in decentralized finance. Many protocols rely on centralized infrastructure providers, oracle feeds, or administrative keys to manage parameters like exchange rates. When those dependencies are compromised, the effects can ripple directly into token pricing, even if the underlying blockchain smart contracts themselves remain secure.
Swell's decision to freeze withdrawals is a common emergency response in such situations. Pausing redemptions prevents users from exploiting an inflated exchange rate to withdraw more ETH than the protocol actually holds. It also buys the team time to audit the breach and restore accurate accounting before normal operations resume.
Liquid restaking tokens have grown into a significant corner of the Ethereum ecosystem since the rise of EigenLayer and related restaking infrastructure. Tokens like swETH and rswETH are frequently used as collateral across lending markets and other DeFi protocols. Disruptions to their pricing or liquidity can therefore extend beyond Swell's own platform.
As of the reporting window, Swell had not announced a timeline for restoring withdrawals. The protocol's stated priority is correcting the exchange rates before resuming redemptions, suggesting a cautious, phased approach rather than an immediate reopening.
Market Impact
A freeze on swETH and rswETH withdrawals removes liquidity options for holders until Swell resolves the exchange-rate discrepancy. Protocols that accept these tokens as collateral may need to reassess their risk parameters while the situation remains unresolved, given uncertainty around the tokens' true backing.
The episode could also renew scrutiny of infrastructure dependencies across liquid restaking protocols more broadly. Investors and integrators may look more closely at how key management, third-party hosting, and administrative access are secured across similar platforms.
Swell's handling of the rate discrepancy and the timeline for restoring withdrawals will likely shape user and protocol confidence in its restaking products going forward.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are swETH and rswETH?
They are liquid restaking tokens issued by Swell Network, representing ether that has been staked or restaked on behalf of users.
What caused the unbacked rate hikes?
Reports attribute the issue to a leaked key connected to Railway, a cloud deployment platform used in Swell's infrastructure, which affected how exchange rates were set.
Can users currently withdraw swETH or rswETH?
No. Swell has frozen withdrawals for both tokens while it works to correct their exchange rates.
Does this affect the underlying staked ETH itself?
The reports focus on the exchange rate used to value the tokens rather than confirming any loss of the underlying staked ETH.
