On April 16, 2026, Camila Jaber broke her own national record by diving 91 meters into a cenote at the Xibalbá Freediving Competition in Cenotillo, Yucatán. She spent two minutes and 43 seconds underwater without taking a breath, becoming the deepest-diving woman in Mexico.
Jaber was born in Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche, and grew up in Quintana Roo. She discovered freediving at 16 and set her first national record in 2017 at the World Championships in Roatán, Honduras. For years, she dreamed of reaching 90 meters. In July 2025, she finally made it happen at the Vertical Blue competition in the Bahamas, then did it again later that year.
Known as the “Mexican Mermaid,” Jaber has also taken her talents beyond competitive diving. In 2025, she trained the actresses playing mermaids in the second season of Netflix’s Wednesday and even appeared as a siren herself. She has also worked on the BBC’s Blue Planet III. In August 2026, she returned to Roatán as a broadcast commentator for the CMAS World Depth Championship.
Back in Mexico, Jaber is passionate about protecting the cenotes she has explored for years. As an ambassador for the Gran Acuífero Maya project, she raises awareness about the importance of preserving the Yucatán Peninsula’s underground water systems. She also brought that message to the screen with her short film Yo Soy Cenote, which won first place in the international #CreateCOP26 arts competition. These natural wonders have been part of her life since she first fell in love with freediving, and she hopes her growing recognition will encourage more people to appreciate and protect them.
As her career expands into television, filmmaking and international competitions, Jaber remains connected to the waters that first inspired her. Her latest record has brought her more recognition, but she hopes it will also draw attention to the extraordinary natural world beneath Mexico’s surface.
