Strategy bought 250 Bitcoin in the week ended October 11 and spent almost nine times as much repurchasing its STRC preferred shares. The purchases show the company’s Bitcoin treasury and its financing structure making competing claims on capital. A share buyback can support a financing instrument without making a new Bitcoin purchase disappear, and the source of each dollar matters more than the comparison alone.
Summary
- Strategy acquired 250 BTC for $21.5 million during the October 5 to 11 reporting period.
- Its $192.4 million STRC repurchase was about 8.95 times the Bitcoin purchase by dollar value.
- MSTR share sales supplied $21 million of the Bitcoin purchase, while $0.5 million came from existing cash.
- The company held 848,250 BTC acquired for about $64 billion as of October 11.
- Strategy reported a $4.88 billion USD Reserve and $640.5 million in separate USD Cash.
The October 12 company disclosure is unusually revealing when its transactions are read together. Strategy acquired BTC with proceeds from MSTR common share sales and a small amount of existing cash. It bought back preferred stock under a separate repurchase authorization. It ended the week with two stated dollar balances serving different purposes.

From Oct. 5–11, the company spent nearly 9x more on STRC buybacks than its latest Bitcoin purchase; Strategy now holds 848,250 BTC, acquired for roughly $64B, and has $4.88B in cash reserves. pic.twitter.com/9VCQOArWoI
The initial news report captured the striking ratio. A longer question follows: when a Bitcoin treasury company must manage a variable rate preferred security, what determines whether its next dollar goes to more BTC, repurchasing the security or keeping cash available for payments? The filings provide some answers but do not disclose an automatic rule for future weeks.
The weekly ledger has three distinct entries
Strategy reported 250 BTC bought for about $21.5 million at an average of $86,194 per coin, including fees and expenses. Holdings reached 848,250 BTC acquired for roughly $64 billion. Dividing that aggregate cost by the current holding count gives an approximate $75,450 average acquisition cost. The calculation uses rounded company totals; it is an accounting reference, not a forecast of what Strategy can realize on a sale.
The company repurchased about 1.93 million STRC shares for $192.4 million. Dividing the reported spending by the approximate share count produces a price near $99.69 a share. Since the share total and spending are rounded, the precise average cannot be recovered from the public summary alone. The $100 stated amount is a financing benchmark for STRC, not a guaranteed stock market floor.
The third entry is cash. At October 11, Strategy said its USD Reserve stood at $4.88 billion and its separate USD Cash at $640.5 million. Adding the two produces $5.5205 billion. They are distinct balances, not an undifferentiated pile available without conditions for Bitcoin purchases. The company describes the reserve as intended for preferred dividends and interest on debt. It says USD Cash may fund Bitcoin, additions to the reserve and broader capital management.
A reader comparing only $192.4 million with $21.5 million misses the financing side. The announcement says $21 million in BTC purchases was funded from net MSTR stock sale proceeds and $0.5 million from USD Cash. It does not mean the company took $192.4 million that was contractually designated for Bitcoin and redirected it. Allocation is a management choice within a stated capital framework, subject to the actual source and restrictions on each pool of money.
Why does Strategy repurchase STRC?
STRC has traded below its target at points this year. STRC is a perpetual preferred security with a variable cash dividend. Preferred investors occupy a different place in Strategy’s capital structure from MSTR common shareholders. Strategy has aimed to support trading near STRC’s $100 stated amount through dividend settings and repurchases. A market price below that level makes selling additional preferred shares less attractive and can raise the effective cost of bringing in capital.
The June 29 capital framework established broad capital management tools, including potential Bitcoin sales in specified circumstances. The July repurchase policy made STRC a focus when it traded below $100. These are permissions and stated priorities, not a binding schedule forcing the company to repurchase a fixed sum each Monday.
Consider a simplified example, not a claim about Strategy’s next transaction. A company can use $100 million to buy a volatile treasury asset or to repurchase a preferred instrument quoted below its stated amount. Buying the preferred at $98 removes approximately $102.04 million of stated amount for the $100 million outlay, ignoring costs, if that security is retired. It may reduce future dividend obligations on those retired shares. Buying Bitcoin instead increases BTC holdings but leaves the preferred claim and dividend policy in place. Which action benefits common holders depends on financing terms, the future BTC price and the instrument’s market price.

The actual October week produced an implied STRC average close to $100, using rounded figures. There is consequently no basis to apply the hypothetical $98 discount to its disclosed buyback. A more precise account would need the transaction level prices and treatment of repurchased shares. The arithmetic illustrates why management may care about the instrument, while the filing establishes only what it reported spending.
MSTR shareholders provide a separate funding route
Strategy sold common stock through its at the market program and used $21 million of net proceeds to buy Bitcoin, according to the October 12 update. Issuing MSTR shares can raise cash without an immediate debt repayment obligation, but it increases the number of common shares. The economic question for a common shareholder is not only whether total BTC rose by 250. It is how much BTC and cash stand behind each share after issuance, repurchases, expenses and preferred claims.
A useful measure would compare changes in BTC per diluted common share across reporting dates, with transparent treatment of convertibles and preferred instruments. A rising corporate BTC balance can coexist with a slower rise or decline in exposure per common share if issuance outpaces accumulation. Conversely, issuance at a sufficiently high share valuation can fund BTC purchases that increase per share exposure. The October press summary by itself does not settle that calculation because it does not supply every share count, conversion assumption and related cash flow in a single comparable series.
The company has a separate $1 billion authorization to buy back MSTR common stock. The October 12 update says the full authorization remained. An authorization is a ceiling, not evidence that any common stock was repurchased in the reported week. It is also different from the preferred repurchase program, under which $354.8 million of buying authority remained after the latest disclosed transactions.
Common stock issuance to fund BTC while preferred stock is repurchased can appear circular if the two are collapsed into a single trade. Legally and economically they are different securities with different rights. The useful reporting question is whether selling one claim and retiring another improves the overall capital structure after accounting for the share price, STRC price and continuing obligations. One week’s spending ratio cannot answer that by itself.
The cash reserve is there for claims on the treasury
Strategy’s USD Reserve is intended to support dividends on preferred stock and interest on outstanding indebtedness. It is a buffer for cash demands that Bitcoin itself does not automatically pay. A company with a large BTC position can be solvent in a broad asset sense yet still face the practical task of funding a scheduled dollar payment during a market decline. The presence of the reserve is a management answer to that mismatch.
The October 5 filing described in related coverage showed $154.1 million of USD Cash used for STRC repurchases and $13 million for Bitcoin in the preceding reporting period. It also recorded $142.5 million from the reserve for preferred dividends and debt interest. Those figures are not a direct measure of the annual cash cost because payment schedules and timing differ. They show how several demands on liquidity can occur in one week.
Strategy’s June framework generally calls for a reserve covering at least 12 months of expected preferred dividends and debt interest, according to the reported filing. The October 11 reserve of $4.88 billion must be read against the applicable commitments and governance rules, not simply treated as idle money that should have bought BTC. A later reserve decline might reflect payments, a policy change, a transfer or new financing. The weekly disclosure needs to identify which.
One way to audit the company’s next report is to make a sources and uses ledger. Start with the previous USD Reserve and USD Cash balances. Add new common or preferred issuance proceeds and any asset sales; subtract BTC purchases, STRC repurchases, dividends, interest and transfers. Where the public disclosure does not reconcile to the penny, label the difference instead of inventing a use. The ledger gives a clearer account than a running tally of Bitcoin held.
Bitcoin exposure now runs through several securities
A buyer of MSTR common stock owns a residual claim on Strategy after its liabilities and senior capital claims. An STRC investor owns a preferred instrument with a variable dividend and different priorities. A person buying BTC directly owns the asset subject to custody and market risk. All three can care about Bitcoin’s price, but their returns and claims are not identical.
The company describes its preferred offerings as ways to provide investors with varying exposure to its Bitcoin focused business. Their market prices depend on financing conditions and confidence in the company’s ability to service the instruments. A preferred repurchase can benefit remaining holders through market support or a reduced amount outstanding, yet it uses cash that could serve other purposes. A common holder may favor a repurchase at one price and oppose it at another.
Management’s case is substantial. Keeping STRC close to the $100 reference may preserve access to a financing channel for future Bitcoin accumulation, and a larger dollar buffer reduces pressure to sell BTC solely to meet cash obligations during weak markets. Buying 250 BTC demonstrates that the treasury strategy continued in the reported week. The strongest version of this argument treats the buyback as maintenance of the machine that finances future acquisitions, not as an abandonment of them.
The counterpoint is equally concrete. If costly preferred dividends and recurring repurchases consume future issuance proceeds, common investors must ask whether more BTC per share is arriving at an attractive cost. Preferred market support is not free, and the dollar buffer itself has an opportunity cost when BTC rises. The tradeoff cannot be adjudicated from a single week’s headline ratio; a series of filings showing shares issued, preferred retired, reserve movements and BTC per share is needed.
What would prove a capital shift?
A lasting change would require more than two or three weekly disclosures in which STRC spending exceeds BTC buying. It would appear in the trend of available repurchase authority, preferred shares outstanding, the dividend rate, common issuance, reserve coverage and net Bitcoin holdings. Strategy’s Bitcoin balance still rose in the latest week. Calling the company a seller on the basis of a buyback would contradict the reported transaction.
An explicit management change to its reserve policy, or repeated sales of BTC to meet preferred obligations, would be materially different evidence. The June framework permits some asset sales under conditions, but permission does not prove one happened during October 5 to 11. The reported increase of 250 BTC is the relevant fact for that interval. Readers should separate authorized tools from completed transactions.
The opposite could happen: STRC may stabilize near its intended price, demand for preferred issuance may recover and proceeds may support larger BTC purchases. That possibility explains management’s logic without establishing that it will occur. Evidence would be reported preferred issuance at acceptable terms, lower repurchase spending, stable reserve coverage and a rising BTC per share measure after new securities are counted.
No published schedule says when the company will cease STRC support or how it will divide future proceeds. Bitcoin’s price, the common stock’s valuation and the preferred security’s trading price all move. Dollar figures in the October disclosure are dated observations. Presenting the 8.95 ratio as a new permanent policy would mistake one week’s output for an investment mandate.
The next filing can show whether buybacks bought breathing room
An STRC purchase removes a preferred security from circulation if the shares are retired or held in treasury under the applicable rules. It can reduce an associated dividend obligation, but the actual saving depends on the number of shares retired, the rate set for the relevant period and the company’s accounting treatment. The October release reports spending and approximate shares, not a projected annual saving. Multiplying the whole $192.4 million outlay by a quoted dividend rate would overstate precision because the purchase price is not the same as the shares’ stated amount and rates can change.
A public comparison should record three denominators each week. Cash spent is the first. Preferred shares removed is the second. New common shares issued is the third. If a company spends less cash supporting STRC but sells much more common stock to fund a modest BTC purchase, the net effect on MSTR holders can differ from the impression left by the buyback amount. Likewise, a preferred buyback below par may have a different financial effect from one made at par.
Strategy’s next disclosure could clarify whether the remaining $354.8 million authority is being used quickly or held in reserve. The figure is a program limit after the latest reported purchases, not a claim that only $354.8 million of corporate cash exists. The $640.5 million USD Cash balance is a separate observation, and the $4.88 billion reserve is described as protection for payment obligations. Combining authorization and cash into one number would count unlike things.
The quarterly results provide another cross check that a weekly release cannot: the preferred dividend commitments, weighted average share count, any debt maturity schedule and management’s own explanation of why it chose one use of cash over another. If those disclosures show a stable preferred instrument and improving Bitcoin exposure per common share, the case for buybacks as financing maintenance strengthens. If the instrument continues to demand large recurring support while per share exposure stalls, investors have a different set of facts to weigh. Neither outcome is established by the October 12 headline.
What to watch
- Next BTC holdings report: Compare the change in BTC with changes in common shares and other potentially dilutive claims.
- STRC trading near $100: Observe whether the preferred security remains near its stated amount without continued large repurchases.
- Remaining repurchase capacity: Track the $354.8 million preferred authorization and the separate $1 billion MSTR authorization.
- USD Reserve movements: Check the $4.88 billion balance against disclosed dividends, interest and transfers in the next filing.
- Funding mix: Identify whether Bitcoin acquisitions come from new MSTR sales, preferred sales, USD Cash or asset dispositions.
FAQ
How much Bitcoin did Strategy buy in its latest report?
It reported 250 BTC acquired for about $21.5 million during October 5 to 11, 2026. Its holdings reached 848,250 BTC as of October 11.
How much did it spend repurchasing STRC?
The company reported $192.4 million of STRC repurchases. Based on rounded figures, that was approximately 8.95 times its $21.5 million Bitcoin purchase.
Did Strategy sell Bitcoin to pay for the STRC buyback?
The October 12 summary reports a net increase of 250 BTC for the week and does not describe a Bitcoin sale funding the disclosed buyback. Authorization to sell in its broader framework is a separate matter.
What funded the latest Bitcoin purchase?
Net proceeds from MSTR common share sales paid for $21 million, and existing USD Cash paid for another $0.5 million, according to Strategy.
What is STRC?
It is Strategy’s variable rate perpetual preferred stock. Its dividend and claim on the company differ from those of MSTR common shares and from owning Bitcoin directly.
How much cash did Strategy disclose?
At October 11, the company reported a $4.88 billion USD Reserve and $640.5 million of separate USD Cash. Their combined balance was $5.5205 billion.
Does a buyback authorization require Strategy to spend it?
No. Remaining authority states how much could be spent under a program, subject to its conditions. It is not a completed transaction or a fixed timetable.
Does buying back STRC mean Strategy has abandoned Bitcoin?
No. The same disclosure recorded a 250 BTC purchase. Whether the allocation changes over time requires a series of filings on financing, repurchases and per share exposure. This is educational analysis, not investment advice.
