Pope 'wants to make the trip to Latin America'

(ANSA) - ROME, 14 OTT - Pope Leo wants to recover from lung-cancer surgery in time to make his first apostolic journey to Latin America from November 6 to November 17, 2026, visiting 10 cities across Uruguay, Argentina, and his old missionary stamping ground Peru, the Vatican said Wednesday. "We have heard the Pope's words, his intention, and his desire to go. We shall see," said Vatican Press Office Director Matteo Bruni in response to journalists asking whether the trip was confirmed. During the Angelus on Sunday, October 11—prior to the announcement of his surgery—the Pope had greeted Peruvians in St. Peter's Square, thanking them for their prayers regarding the trip to Peru that he "will undertake."
