The Buffalo Bills notched a thrilling 37-34 win over the Los Angeles Rams on Monday night, claiming victory with a game-winning field goal from kicker Tyler Bass.
After blocking a field-goal attempt from Rams kicker Harrison Mevis, the Bills got set up in Los Angeles territory with an opportunity to win the game.
Bills head coach Joe Brady elected to attempt the field goal on 2nd-and-10 with two minutes remaining in the overtime period. The Rams had no timeouts remaining, meaning Buffalo could have wound the clock down to just over 30 seconds by running two more plays.
If Bass had missed the kick, Matthew Stafford and the Rams would've had plenty of time to work their way into field-goal range and win the game.
Brady responded to criticism over his decision when speaking to reporters on Tuesday.
"You know it's going to be all-out blitz there, and you don't want to go backwards," Brady said. "You obviously have the confidence that [Bass] is going to make it, but you also have to play in your head 'Hey, if he doesn't make it, how much time do they have?'
"Do we take two knees right there and go back? At least they don't have a chance at a rebuttal. Moves it from a 45-yard field goal to a 47-yard field goal. Do you run two QB sneaks? But there's a lot of risk with bangs on the head and punching at the ball."
Brady continuously expressed his confidence in Bass, who was ultimately the hero of Monday night's win.
"Does that make it the right decision? Not necessarily. You can't judge the quality of the decision by the result," Brady concluded.
