The Oklahoma City Thunder wasted little time making a statement to the rest of the NBA following their season-opening victory over the San Antonio Spurs. However, superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander might have delivered an even stronger message after the final buzzer.
Oklahoma City defeated San Antonio 116-104 on Tuesday night, with Gilgeous-Alexander leading the way with 32 points. While the victory offered an encouraging start to the 2026-27 campaign, the Thunder superstar revealed something potentially more concerning for opposing teams.
Speaking with NBC’s Ashley ShahAhmadi following the victory, Gilgeous-Alexander suggested Oklahoma City’s mentality has reached another level. Despite the franchise’s recent success, the Thunder apparently believe they have considerably more to accomplish.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Sends Strong Message to Rest of NBA
“This group’s hungry,” Gilgeous-Alexander told ShahAhmadi. “This group wants more. This group is not satisfied.”
Those comments should grab the attention of every Western Conference contender, particularly considering Oklahoma City’s already impressive collection of talent.
However, the most revealing portion of Gilgeous-Alexander’s remarks came when he compared the current team’s motivation to previous seasons.
“A little bit more so than in the past. I can feel it. We can feel it,” Gilgeous-Alexander continued. “We feel it in the building and in the facility. We wanna get better every day, and we will chip away to do that this year.”
That’s an intriguing admission from the face of a franchise that has already established itself among basketball’s elite.
Gilgeous-Alexander isn’t simply suggesting Oklahoma City wants to win another championship. He’s describing a noticeable change in the organization’s everyday environment, where players apparently recognize that their previous accomplishments aren’t enough.
Oklahoma City Thunder Could Become Even More Dangerous
The Thunder already possess one of the NBA’s most talented young cores, featuring Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams. Their combination of defensive versatility, offensive firepower and remarkable depth makes Oklahoma City a difficult matchup for virtually anybody.

Nevertheless, maintaining championship-level motivation remains challenging, particularly for a team that has already experienced considerable success.
That’s what makes Gilgeous-Alexander’s assessment so interesting.
Rather than becoming comfortable with their accomplishments, the Thunder appear determined to raise their standards even further.
Of course, one regular-season victory doesn’t guarantee Oklahoma City will dominate the competition. The Thunder still have 81 games remaining before the postseason, and plenty of challenges await.
But Gilgeous-Alexander’s comments offer an important glimpse into the organization’s mentality.
The rest of the NBA already knows how dangerous Oklahoma City can be. Now, its superstar is suggesting this version of the Thunder might be even hungrier than the teams that came before it.
For opposing contenders, that’s a potentially frightening proposition.
