Ethiopia’s strong economic growth outlook could face challenges from persistent inflation and a widening current account deficit, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned in its October 2026 World Economic Outlook report.
The IMF projects Ethiopia’s real gross domestic product (GDP) to grow by 9.2 percent in 2026, matching the estimated growth rate for 2025. However, growth is expected to slow to 7.8 percent in 2027, highlighting potential challenges to sustaining the country’s economic momentum.
Despite the positive growth outlook, inflation remains a significant concern. The report estimates that consumer price inflation in Ethiopia stood at 16 percent in 2025. It is projected to decline to 11.7 percent in 2026 before rising to 12.3 percent in 2027.
Although the anticipated decline in inflation in 2026 would mark an improvement, the rate would remain relatively high, potentially continuing to put pressure on household purchasing power and business operating costs.
Persistent inflation can erode the real value of household incomes, particularly among families with limited financial resources. Higher prices can also increase production and operating expenses for businesses, making it more difficult for economic growth to translate into improved living standards.
The IMF report also highlights concerns about Ethiopia’s external account position. The country’s current account deficit is projected to widen from an estimated 0.8 percent of GDP in 2025 to 2.5 percent in 2026 before narrowing to 1.3 percent in 2027.
The projected deterioration in 2026 points to potential pressure on the country’s external balance, although the anticipated improvement in 2027 suggests some easing of the imbalance.
Beyond Ethiopia, the IMF warns that the global economy remains vulnerable to geopolitical conflicts, trade disruptions and fluctuations in energy and food prices.
Global economic growth is projected to slow from 3.5 percent in 2025 to 3.1 percent in 2026 before recovering to 3.4 percent in 2027. Global consumer price inflation is expected to reach 4.7 percent in 2026 and decline to 4.1 percent in 2027.
The Fund cautions that these global projections mask significant differences among countries in their capacity to withstand economic shocks. Economies with stronger fiscal positions, diversified production and broader access to international markets are generally better equipped to manage disruptions.
In contrast, many low-income countries face mounting pressure from rising import costs and limited financial resources, restricting their ability to respond effectively to external shocks.
For Ethiopia, fluctuations in international markets could affect domestic prices, trade and foreign exchange availability. Rising global oil and food prices could increase import expenditure, intensify inflationary pressures and place additional strain on the country’s external accounts.
The report identifies continuing conflicts in the Middle East as a major risk to global economic growth. An escalation of hostilities could disrupt energy infrastructure, transportation routes and international supply chains, potentially driving up commodity prices and increasing uncertainty in global markets.
The IMF urges governments to strengthen their financial capacity to withstand economic shocks by increasing domestic revenue, improving the efficiency of public spending and implementing credible plans to maintain fiscal stability.
It also recommends that assistance to people affected by rising fuel and food prices should be temporary and targeted at vulnerable households. Broad-based support maintained over extended periods, the Fund warns, could place additional pressure on government finances.
Beyond short-term stabilization measures, the IMF emphasizes the need to raise productivity and diversify economic activity to reduce vulnerability to international disruptions.
